It's still a lot of cash if the car isn't exactly what you want After a couple of weeks of driving it, and getting used to it being quicker in a straight line, but even heavier round corners, you'll start ogling other cabs again. ...especially black ones, if that's what you really want. DeanW
Like I said in the first post it's not like I've been looking to change my current car - I'm really very happy with it at the moment but the S4 sounded like a such a good deal. In a ideal world yeah I would love a black S4 but if I don't go for this one I won't be looking for a black one I'll stick with my girly blue 1.8T

If the S4 has a good spec, it may not cost you that much as a short-term purchase if you genuinely are getting a "bargain" ?
UBM
CabLad - Remember the fuel costs! I've started giving the 3L some on thevwork trip and back - only getting 26mpg! I was thinking tonight - "glad I don't have an S4"!
DeanW
I reckon mines worth £19K ish, so roughly £10K to change - and I'm getting a car that's a year newer with less mileage and one hell of a better spec! I'd like to think if I do swap though it'll be something I'll hang on to for a few years - if I don't get on with it though I don't think I'd struggle to sell it and get my money back

DeanW
[ QUOTE ] You sound like you've talked yourself into it already! Have you driven it? [/ QUOTE ] I'd talked myself into an S4, maybe not this one though - that's the problem! Hence the reason I asked you guys for your opinions, I was doing my sums earlier to make sure I could afford it - and to run it. I'm going to sleep on it but after what's been said I'm swaying away from the idea a bit, especially after what CraigR said - and he had the identical car! I guess I was blinkered by the fact it was an S4 and maybe not 100% what I was after. I'd not even made a decision that I wanted an S4 next and if I don't go for this I won't be looking to change anyway - I actually booked my 1.8T in with AMD this morning before I heard about this S4! Oh well, looks like I'll have to settle for a trip down to AMD next Monday [/ QUOTE ] However! You're going to spend 1100+VAT or around abouts aren't you? If thats the case, swapping to the S4 makes a bit more sense. The insurance on the S4 may be less than on a modded 1.8T (I don't know though), and AMD work won't give you any extra value at resale time... it may even reduce the price. Definitely have a good think about it.
Milo
Cab Lad - if you aren't pushing yourself too far with the finances and think you can get away with a £10k cost to change, I would do it. You obviously want more umph than your 1.8T is giving you and are prepared to pay big bucks for it. If the money is there then I say go for the S4. I am not a fan of blue cars in general (sorry all blue car owners ) but I like Sprint Blue. I would love a black car next but 2 months of looking after Mrs Milo's new black car have convinced me it's not for me. For £29k, I say go for it - you could sell it on in 6 months time and not lose that much and would have had 6 months of fun in the meantime
JamesB
Cab Lad, I may have missed it somewhere in the thread but I can't work out why you want an S4 You say you are happy with your current car and don't think you will appreciate the extra power so why the need for an S4? I may get shot down in flames here but I bought my S4 purely for the additional performance and have never thought they look different enough from the A4 to justify the extra cash on looks alone. Or do you just want it for the prestige of owning an S4? Not something I could justify but if that's what you want, go for it.
gizze
Just to let you know, when I enquired about an S4 in red that was on for £31,450 with a main dealer they said that if it had been another colour it would have been more money, apart from sprint blue! They had a demonstrator in sprint blue and not one person ordered that colour in the three months they had it on the road, he said I could have theirs with 3k miles on it for less than £31k, this was back in March and it was a 2005 '54 plate with a few options. Given that they were offering it for under £31k I reckon your mate has been offered around £28k for his, maybe even less. If you could get it for that then I think you would be doing alright. [/ QUOTE ] That's just the sort of advise I was looking for, cheers Gizze If the car had of been red I would have done the deal yesterday without too much consideration as IMO Brill Red comes in a very close second behind Black. I sort of made a decision last night I was going to leave it but I'm going to nip and see it again later and maybe offer a bit less - it's not like I shook hands on a deal at £29K yesterday. [/ QUOTE ] That was one of my hang ups along with the colour - do I really need the extra power? To be honest I got my head round the fact that although it is a 340bhp car it doesn't have to be driven like one 24/7 and that moderation was the name of the game - and yeah one of the big draws for me was the prestige behind the S4 badge but the big attraction was the price of the car and cost to swap. Chav
I think you're doing the right thing walking away anyway Cab_Lad. Gizze certainly seems to know about getting a good deal. Also you'd find it harder to swap your S4 sprint cab when you inevitably decide you want to change again, e.g for black one or B7 one etc. Quite shocking that S4 cabs are already available for less than I paid for my 3.0 cab though. Cars are just money pits. Full stop.
