pingpongpo
Saw an article in the Times yesterday detailing VW plans to have a 1.4l twin turbo engine giving the same performance as standard 2l engines. It is in a bid to cut down on fuel emissions etc
Mook
They call it the "superturbo". The 1.4 engine runs a supercharger and a turbo. Smaller engine = fewer emissions, but the combo of a supercharger and a turbo means power right through the rev range. It will be seen in the Mk5 Golf GT first (not the GTI, which will retain the 2.0TFSI engine).

benjie
It's a shame about those VAG PD engines. They sound more agressive and refined to me, compared to commonrail. You can always tell when a VAG group diesel is going past because of the engine tone. I understand why they're doing it, but seems to be a small step back for VW though. Rustynuts
It's all to do with environmental issues. The PD injection system as it is has problems with ever changing regulations regarding emmissions. The Commonrail system has the option of firing the injector opening up to 5 times per cycle (5 injections every time it needs to inject fuel) to maximise the cleanness of the burn, hence less emmissions. The PD system is limited to just 2, 1 pre ignition and one main injection, allbeit at higher pressures than commonrail and it's largely controlled by the cam driving the injector for the timing of the pre ignition. It gives more power potential due to being able to inject the fuel faster, but not so easy to keep it clean. VW obviously thought it better to change to a tried and tested system rather than redesigning their own system. Damn shame. I like my PD engine. It allows me to blow soot at Vauxhall Calibras when they cut me up on the sliproad at Scotch Corner. (Fecker).
Snoopy
In my view the only reason VW went to PD in the first place was they did not want to pay FIAT the rights to use commonrail as they were already in a legal battle with FIAT/lancia because of the VR6 engine and lancias copyrights/patents for narrow angle V engines. DaddyDub
Hi chaps, Ive gone a bit underground recently. Anyway, ive been digging and digging and cant find anything about a relaible release date for the MK5 Golf facelift or the MK6 Golf. VW P&PR and Marketing deptments are keeping tight lipped and not giving anything away. Cant wait for the R36 Passat though (See I told you there wouldn't be an R36 Golf). Also be sure to keep an ear to the ground for a Passat Coupe soon (next 18-24 months), but ill keep you all posted. DD

Snoopy
Anyone heard when the new family of diesels is coming?. New engine family improves efficiency Wolfsburg, 30 September 2005 - The Volkswagen Group is developing a new family of 4-cylinder TDI engines in the context of a modular strategy which will prepare the diesel engines for future, more stringent regulations as well as for world-wide service. With this effort, Volkswagen confirms its leading position in the field of TDI engines. The engines will first be used in 2007 and, with a total capacity of more than 2 million engines per year, will replace the current 3 and 4-cylinder engines in the medium term. This new generation of engines further increases the advantages of today’s diesels in regard to efficiency, environment and performance with high levels of synergy and offers the customers the most modern TDI engine technology at attractive prices. DaddyDub
Well I know they are dropping the TDI PD's soon (June 2007 so 2008 model year) for the more simple but just as effective system everyone else uses. might have something to do with it?
