jimmyp
Ive just been out to check all the levels in the car and i found that i have feck all power steering fluid in the thing that holds it . Now it is under the minimum line and i can see the bottom of the housing and can touch it as it is dry , but the steering doesn't feel heavy and will it be ok to drive it to the nearest vw so i can get them to kindly top it up for me. And why is it bone dry, the car has done 20k and is due a service but surely this is strange
R32North
Very odd. I've never, in all the cars I've owned, had the PS fuild level dain away, not even need topped up I think. Must be a leak or evapouration, ie lid un done a smidge ?
jimmyp
Yes the lid was very loose i was able to undo it with my fingers with ease.
pncarrerars
Check the power steering pipe where it joins to steering rack behind the gearbox on the battery side. Mine leaks & I have heard of others leaking in the same place.
R32North
Hmmmm, might be the answer to your problem. Just look in the R32 book and then nip along to local Motor Store and pick up some power steering fluid. VW stuff won't be anything special, so as long as the stuff you buy conforms to VW spec it'll be fine.
jimmyp
Ok, i've just been out having a butchers under the bonnet, there doesn't seem to be any sign of leakage and all pipes are secure. So hopefully it will just be evaporation as the lid was loose. But will she be ok to drive to the motor store/VW to get fluid??
jimmyp
Any one know what the spec for the fluid is as this isn't in the manual.
ubbs
have you checked it when the car has been stood overnight?
jimmyp
It was stationary for a good few hours when i went out to check it, why.
ubbs
had this problem back in 1995 on a new corrado vr6 after driving it home from the dealers i was looking around the engine bay and noticed the resovoir was below minimum, after ringing the dealers they advised to check it again in the morning which i did and it was spot on the max line. jimmyp
Funny you should say that as i only got it back from the dealers yesterday, and i'm sure it wasn't loose before it went in, but i will do what you said and check it in the morning. Nice one ubbs
Decked
I had exactly the same thing, had the car serviced and noticed a funny noise in the power steering, opened the bonnet to find the power steering bottle was loose and empty!!! jimmyp
Did you just have to top it up or was there any other probs?
Decked
I had to top it up, just made sure the lid was tight and haven't had any problems since.
jimmyp
Ok, what type of fluid do i need to get, do you know the spec?
Decked
No idea, just picked up some from Halfords, the best one they had... (well, most expensive) They said it was suitable for my car, not that they know anyway, seems to have done the job.

mb
When my Corrado needed a top up I went to the VW dealer and they just let me top up from their bottle as I obviously wouldn't be needing a whole bottle so if they are near you this may be worth a try as you can always buy a bottle from them if they are mean ! Decked
That's true, i only needed a small amount, worth a try.
graeme86
Mine was leaking there too. There was an oily mist deposit under the back of the gearbox which I noticed when I did an oil change. Not really obvious if you look into the engine bay from the top.
mulkbear
VW G 002 000 Spec, It should be Green and smell sweet. If there is some in the reservoir (just below the minimum) it should be ok to drive to the nearest dealer
Langers555
Graeme, did you get the leak fixed or just top up the fluid? I think I have the same problem as you with oil on the underside of the car.
graeme86
Dealer found and replaced leaking hose and topped up fluid during last service. Don't just keep topping it up -get it fixed.
