Not totally pointless. It proved they COULD do it

Anything can be proven. A similar argument could be had over the Caparo T1. I love it and the idea of it but without a dedicated race series it is rather pointless. These cars are now closer than ever to the £300k mark. For that money you could have a couple of Formula Renault or one with lots or race backup...

The Bugatti is a funny one. Yes it is very fast but its also not really set up to be fast in any situation par a straight line. The turbos need spooling so it will loose the instant edge over n/a super cars, its very heavy so is disappointing on track and according to most the people I have met who has driven or even sold them - its fairly dull to drive. As you have said the only real reason for Bugatti to make it is to show they can and the only reason for someone to really buy it is to show how much money they have. For those reasons I regard it as pointless.

I totally agree +++

I was just playing Devil's advocate and that's the best thing I could come up with, which along with the points you've raised above is more reason to own one than a few other cars on the road (If you've got the money obviously).

Surely the most pointless car ever should go to something that completely missed its target audience, regardless of what it looked like.

The 1970 Range Rover fits nicely, designed as piece of farm machinary, but with shag-pile carpet? WTF? Plus 3mpg fuel economy at a time when the world was on the verge of fuel crisis. You win again BL...

Back when the Range Rover was launched, the only people who drove four wheel drive vehicles were the likes of farmers and soldiers. The Range Rover hit it's target market of rich farmers pretty much spot on, unlike say the X5 or that Porsche abomination, old Range Rovers are pretty handy off road while offering a degree of luxury not found on a Land Rover.

The most pointless car ever has to be the BMW X6, the Mercedes A Class is a close second.

Gotta be the Vauxhall Corsa. Up to 5 years old, they're owned by dithering pensioners or housewives and then they get purchased by kiddiewinks and have bean-can exhaust trims and knackered alloys applied. Now you've got to dodge the little ******'s.

What about 70s Alfa Arno? A joint venture with Nissan. How logical to have a car designed by the Japanese and built by Italians.

A copper I knew described the Scorpio as like c**t, ugly to look at but very nice once you are inside.

I knew one of the designer chappies on the Scorpio (facelift) at Ford. He had just gone through a divorce and when I asked why the "new look" he stated "why should a car look happy ?" Once you get the jist of it's reason d'etre, jump in and enjoy a luxurious brute of car. It's a very British thing. Like the Smiths....on 4 wheels

I bought one once... a 2006 Honda Accord 3.0 Mugen. They don't have these in the UK and I can see why.

Engine taken from a Honda NSX. Beautiful 3 litre VTEC V6 with 240BHP. Powerful, smooth, revvy ... an absolute jewel of an engine. Better than any other normally aspirated engine I can think of for this size. a real gem. Body and equipment as good as any BMW or Merc. Sounds great...

Then some idiots at the factory decided to fit it in a front wheel drive car, with a schizophrenic auto gear box which could never decide which gear to use. Suspension was soft like a marshmellow so fat yanks couldn't feel the road. It had understeer like a supertanker. Front tyres would last 5 or 6000 kms (yes kilometers). Being the Hot shot "Mugen" version it got a $6000 exhaust system to show off the beautiful engine... Impressive... but it also made you deaf and combined with the aforementioned gearbox drove you mad.

A classic case of what the men in grey suits can do to a great engine.

Y'see, in theory that Accord Mugen would be right up my street if it wasn't so funamentally flawed.

I guess it's one of those wonderfully subjective things about cars that Honda do that and create an absolute dog, yet Lancia do exactly the same and create a legend.

I saw an Alfa Arna once. I have this theory that in a room somewhere the grey suits had hit upon this brilliant idea that a car enjoying the best of Italian design and the best of Japanese reliability would be a sure fire winner, only for there to be a very early yet catastrophic cock up in the assignment of responsibilities.

Didn't they fit that V6 into the Honda Accord coupe? circa 1998?

Just Google Mitsuoka and gorge on all the mundane Japanese tin bashed about to look like almost equally mundane British tin with shiny chrome from a generation earlier (apart from the interiors which if you're lucky get a bit of fake wood slapped on).

Actually, there possibly is a point to them but you still probably need a thick skin to own one.

The Lifan BMW Mini sort of lookalike gets my vote....
