garcon magnifique
I wish I was still in the market for hot hatch type stuff. In my day (not that long ago admittedly) it was an Impreza or... well, what? If I was still in that market I'd definitely be looking at the Focus. And the VXR for that matter. NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Having driven a Feckus for a few weeks....I wouldn't give you 17.5p for one, never mind wasting £17,500 on one. Utter garbage. [/ QUOTE ] Bollocks to that comment, I've driven the new TDCI and it's a good car for what it is. I would say the new ST will be a very good car, much better than the RS. [/ QUOTE ] Bollocks indeed. However, how long did you drive it for? See, I've been driving one for 4 weeks, each week doing a 500+ mile round trip - and that tells you what a car is really like. Forget the gutless engine. Think aout the steering that has about as much feedback as a numb finger put under anaesthetic just for good measure. Think about the plastic interior feeling harder than the exterior panels. Think about the ride quality being similar to a roller coaster on a shale heap - with bits of the track missing. Think about the gearchange being as sloppy as <<self edited but said a well used female who charges for her services and enjoys large gatherings of the opposite sex whilst checking the lubricant of her vehicle for other use possibilities>>. Think crap. That's the Feckus. Oh, and our cats are better than the Feckus RS so that's not much of a yardstick.

Chav
Seriously though... Mainstream brands are seriously catching up with the "premium" ones for fit/finish and build quality IMO. The only car i've had the misfortune to sit in recently that really did feel like complete and utter dross was a Kia 4x4 thingy. Christ, what an appalling heap of crap. I'd rather have a 1-series any day!

sayerbloke
OK. My opinion [FWIW]. If I had £18K to spend on a car, it wouldn't be on a Ford. Resale values aside, I wouldn't even pay that for a Ford GT, let alone a breathed on Focus. And yes, I am being serious.

sayerbloke
There's two Fords I`d happily own; The RS200 and some versions of the Mustang. But as they go for more than I`d be willing to pay, it`s not a decision I foresee myself having to make.
cruiser647
All opinions aside (including mine - FF - Fecking Ford), it will sell. PERIOD. It's a Ford and they all sell well. Doesn't matter if it is a crock of sh1t, it will still sell. Remember the old Escort/Orion (circa 1990)??? IT WAS THE WORST CROCK OF POOH EVER PRODUCED, and it was still the no.1 best seller........in the UK. Astra and Golf were soooo much better, but the public did not care. Good 5 cyl engine though, and they missed out when VW had the VR6 Golf.......Just need GM to put a multi-cyl into the Astra and VW to put the 3.2/3.6 into the Golf quicker...... If they need one that bad, why not wait 12 months and get one for half the price.
malagus
There is a bit too much snobbery directed at ford here. The focus ST is supposed to have all the power and chucability of the old RS for 17k. Undercuts all the current hot family hatches except the outgoing CTR, and looks pretty good for the money. good value for a hot hatch. The badge still doesn't have the VW cache though. sayerbloke
Can it be considered just plain "snobbery" if you can give genuine reasons for why you wouldn't own a Ford? If it goes beyond "I couldn't own a Ford, what would the neighbours think?!" it isn't snobbery [imho].

chrisan
I've had Fords for the last 15 years, but I've never bought one from new - the depreciation is shocking. I've just sold a 4 year old ST200 Limited Edition 4 door saloon - very rare, and it was quite superb. Apart from depreciation, the other thing thats put me off fords is the after sales - especially the service desk. You need to have a qualification on how to be a complete 2wat to be one of their service managers - and I've dealt with numerous over the years. The A4 I collect tomorrow will be my first Audi. Their service managers may/may not be any better, but at least I won't have the depreciation. And finally, but this is the contentious bit, I'll also have a better badge - but hey - I've worked hard for it, so why not? Chris

[/ QUOTE ] Well said Malagus and I'd have to agree with you. Ford have been making some great cars recently. But in the UK we just want the badge. Have a look in the Golf GTI forum and they are having loads of problems with their quality product. Ford aren't great and they have been dire in the past. But I consider them to be equal to VW in the quality stakes and have been better on the handling side of things for quite a while.

[/ QUOTE ] My mates Fords were soooo poorly put to together, doors shut with a 'tang', engines were as rough as a badgers arse and to me, pretty ugly cars. They have just don't do anything for me. (Only ones I have ever liked were the Sweeney Granada, Granada Coupe and the Cowley's 'The Professional's' 2.8i GhiaX Granada.......) I know now, that they might be decent cars, but I will not buy one - just as I won't buy a Kia, Honda, Mitsubishi, BMW (new ones), Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat, Nissan, Toyota etc...... But, I would buy Alfa, Lancia, GM, VW, Audi, Merc, Skoda, Seat, Subaru, Saab.......... That's not badge snobbery......
felixthecat1
I'ver read all the posts and I have to say tyhere are a lot of snobs out there, but that's fine because we need all sorts. I wouldn't want to spend my money on a brand new Ford but there are few cars I would buy new. It's just throwing money away. I've bought new before and second hand suits me better. So, yes I would concider buying a pre-owned ST but there are still better options around. Yes the 2.4 Volvo unit is smooth and much nicer than the 4 pot offered by others so that's a good reason to buy one but still not enough. Ford are the cream of the mass market car manufacturers. They always make cutting edge fresh dynamic motors and at a good price too. As far as design goes nobody pushes things forward ike Ford do. None of us would be driving the car we have today if it wasn't for Ford. They revolutionised manufacturing procedures and the shape of all car to come when they introduced the Sierra back in 1984, or was it 1983. Anyway, I respect Ford even if I don't actually want to buy a new one. I hope they sell shed loads.

I was in a mates Saab 93 Aero, two years old, falling apart inside and smoking like a trooper. Oh and you wouldn't own a Mitsubishi Evo? Are you crazy? £20,000 for a Rocket Ship, sounds like a bargain new or second hand.
sayerbloke
Every Ford I`ve ever been in or driven has been horrendous. They also fall apart like there's no tomorrow and only ever hear bad things about the dealers. New or used, I wouldn't hand over good money for anything with a Ford badge because I don't like them or their products. I`d have the equivalent Vauxhall over a Ford every single time, from any point in the two company's histories.
NewNiceMrMe
Forgive me, but where the feck are all these badge snobbery comments coming from? Just because someone doesn't rate a particular brand doesn't mean it's due to snobbery. Prior to the 320d we had a Focus TDCi and a Skoda Octavia TDi. We've also had a Peugeot 406, a VW Passat, a VW Bora TDi and a Nissan Primera 2.0D - all in the last 5 years. Many moons ago I owned a Fiesta 1.1L, a Fiesta XR2 and then and XR2i. I have also owned an Austin Montego 1.6HL - oh, and a Morris Ital 1.7 HLS. Hang on, I forgot the Citroen AX 1.4D, oh, and the Opel Kadett 1.3 Coupe and the old Cavalier. Almost forgtt, there was the Ford Granada 2.0GLi. So, where is the badge snobbery? Before people start throwing badge snobbery crap about they should check to see if it's really badge snobbery or people judging on personal experience. Take people's comments for what they are and stop trying to label people just because they have a pop at something that doesn't have a 'perceived badge value'. It doesn't mean they're a badge snob. This final comment isn't directed at anyone in particular in this thread but I'll tell you what is a damn sight worse than snobbery in this country.....inverted snobbery - and the UK has far too much of it. I have had a Lancia and an Alfa and they never let me down. Reliable as clockwork. Lancia Thema and an Alfasud. None of my 4 Vx Omega's ever let me down, (auto, RWD, snow and uphill is genius with the snow mode button on!!). none of my Audis have ever let me down. Maybe I am lucky with cars..........????
