Ben
[ QUOTE ] Is Dubai too commercialised then? [/ QUOTE ] No idea, only got out of the resort once! Depends what you're after I guess, we just wanted to relax before the baby came so got looked after and chilled for the week. Couldn't go on any dune excursions, wake boarding etc as the wife was pregnant. Cheers Ben
Adam
just booked for 7 nights in Jumeirah Beach Hotel - supposedly 6 star and it better be given the cost. Looks great though and hopefully not next to a building site like most of Dubai apparently is. Just want to veg out on the beach for a week but does anyone have any recommendations of places to go in evening just to get out of the hotel? Any good restauarants or are they all hotel-based? What's with the shopping out there? Any bargains (is it just diamonds?)

Adam
booger - Jumeirah is fully booked so I need an alternative sharpish! being suggested the Habtoor Grand Resort & Spa 5* whcih the agent is saying is more expensvie but they will do for the same price this seems odd as I thought JB was the most expensive after the Burj? other than the Royal Meridien and Mina A' Salam what are peoples recommendations for a chilled out place with great food, a touch of luxury but no building noise or screaming kids? [/ QUOTE ] I think Jumeirah Beach shoud be cheaper than most of the Madinat Jumeirah Hotels (i.e. Mina a' Salam etc), but probably more child oriented. It depends what you are after. Having stayed in both the Burj (2-nights only!!) and Jumeirah Beach, I can recommend both, but if I was going back to Dubai, I'd try for the Mina A' Salam as the best compromise. A4CabGirl
Wow, I haven't been here for a while and my Dubai thread is still on the first page ! Well our trip to India and Dubai is all booked and we jet off next Saturday. In Dubai we are staying at Jumeirah Beach hotel which sounds fantastic according to Tripadvisor reports. We have also booked afternoon tea at The Burj, which is just opposite our hotel. Can't wait ...30 degrees and sunny here I come ...... Also staying in a beautiful palace hotel near Jaipur, which has apparently featured in TV programmes and magazines over the years. Started the course of anti malarial tablets today ... YUK! stevie_d
Hey mate, if you haven't booked yet then try the Ritz-Carlton. We love it there as it's more "classy" than the Burj, we find that far too OTT. The hotel is a little further out, about 15 minutes by taxi to Jumeriah Beach area, but it's top class! If you can get into the Club Suites (normal rooms, but you get access to the Club Lounge, which is effectively all you can eat snacks and all you can drink booze!) then that is well worth it. I've just read that you want to screaming kids or noise! That's the Ritz-Carlton mate! Seriously chilled, loads of room and there's an adults only pool! Not sure it it's been mentioned, but Wild Wadi is great fun! It is near the Burj, kinda attached to Jumeriah Beach hotel. Also check out the shopping centres, they're all pretty ace! Of course you maybe dragged along to the Gold/Diamond Souks. EDIT: just read to the end of the thread, that'll teach me p.s. advice of where to go, still stands though

Food excellent and great choice of 6/7 restaurants Excellent gym facilities. Very nice grounds with good pools, lawns and beach. Rooms average for 5* (why is satellite TV so shite in supposedly 5* hotels - just a half decent movie or sports channel would be good eg Sky). Service very good and polite. excellent breakfast (we skipped lunch most days). Fantastic climate - in low 30s every day but with nice breeze, not humid Negatives Dubai is fecking dull - a tasteless mix of money and building sites, nowt of value to do or see, no interesting streets with shops/bars/restaurants to browse (for obvious cultural reasons). The much vaunted shopping centres are indeed huge and impressive but are UK prices and similar range of shops - its like Lakeside without the chavs and litter. Its relatively expensive - all our evening meals were £80 on average for two with one half bottle of wine (wife preggers, me not drinking much on my own). I guess its because the only place to eat is in the 5* hotels. Overall - Duabi has little going for it apart from the climate. For a week lazing in guaranteed sun doing nothing more strenuous than turning the page of your book its perfect. That is what we were after so it was perfect. [/ QUOTE ] Jumeirah Beach is good, but is quite family oriented, which may be good or bad depending on your requirements. It does have (free) access to the Wild Wadi water park next door which is good fun! Depending on your budget, 2 * nights in Burj-al-Arab folowed by 5 * nights in Jumeriah Beach is the perfect solution!! PM me if you'd like some more info! A4CabGirl
Hi I can HIGHLY recommend the JBH. We stayed at JBH for 6 nights in March (well before any kids holidays so no problem) and it was perfect and really didn't feel like it was a big hotel. Staff are really lovely, and so happy to see you. Excellent choice of restaurants. Golf buggies to take you over to Mina A'salaam (recommend a boat trip round its waterways) and The Burj (we had tea there and it was fabulous - wow what a view!) Free shuttle to Mall of the Emirates All the rooms have spectacular views of the sea and Burj al Arab. We also hesitantly went over the Wild Wadi and had a great time... not normally my cup of tea but was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Also book the Arabian Adevntures 'Sundowner' trip in 4x4's into the desert, a great experience not to be missed. Book it NOW, and enjoy your trip ! We'll be going back to stay at The Burj next time, to celebrate my 40th..... a few years to go so saving up for that one ! HTH A4CG

If we go back to Dubai, I won;t be staying in the Burj, as fantastic as it was, I've 'done' that now..... Sidicks
JasonP
An old thread I know but thought I would add my thoughts. Am off to Dubai in 3 weeks time for the 3rd time, have been with and without the kids. Without the kids, the Ritz Carlton is the one to go for, someone mentioned the Club Level and this is certainly the one to go for, free food and booze all day long. The hotel is a lot smaller than most but has everything you need. With the kids, we stayed at the Al Qsar (part of the Jumeirah group). Lots more restaurants on site as you can use the restaurants at the adjoining hotels plus the souk (is that how you spell it!!!) has a few restaurants as well, the shops here are disapointing though. Kids club is superb, they even offer an evening kids club where the kids can have dinner if you fancy a night off. Am off back to the Ritz shortly and can't wait. Don't go to Dubai if you want an activity holiday or for any history, only go if you want to laze by the pool and catch some rays in a splendid setting with superb service. [/ QUOTE ] VERY good point to make. It has to be one of the dullest and unappealing places i have ever been in my life. But the service is impeccable (sp?!!) so for relaxing and being treated like a king and queen, you will be pushed to beat it. PS - you HAVE to visit WildWadi water park.....
