NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] Remind me, is your car auto or manual. Is it that you're not used to FWD? [/ QUOTE ] Manual. I've driven god knows how many FWD cars and remember that for 6 weeks prior to the Avant I was trundling about each day in a Ford Focus - and not once did I get wheelspin (there may be a rational explanation for that in that the car was as powerful as a sparrows fart). Big wow. I've kept all my comments totally neutral and considered. Why the feck would I have picked an A4 if I'd prefered the 320d? Why the feck have we owned VW's before, an Octavia before? I'm not the one wearing the blinkers. I simply have a question and an issue with one feature of the car. I thought TSN was a place to lodge such queries and get reasoned response (which I have to say most other users have given).
Rustynuts
Well, I was about to say "Give him front wheel drive, massive fuel economy, stump pulling torque, and all the other Audi toys etc. and all he can find to be picky about is the fact that Pirelli's are crap.". But I'd better not.
UBM
Surely, if your car is ESPing all the time, it is telling you to back off! Take the hint Chris, drive the car as it is asking to be driven, not how you are wanting to drive it! Or switch the feckin ESP off!
Chav
[ QUOTE ] I have NEVER come across a car where this problem is so apparent as in the A4 TDi. It's shockingly bad. It was raining heavily down here last night and on every occasion I needed to pull off with a degree of moderate pace (junctions, slip roads etc)...the front wheels spin. It's sh1te. [/ QUOTE ] The wheels won't actually be spinning that much I don't think. the ESP gives feedback to the driver to let them know whats happening... just like with the ABS, etc. It feels like all hell is being let loose at the wheels, but usually the slip is prevented within only a few degrees of rotational spin. If it didn't give any feedback, you'd ignore it more and keep pushing your foot down, and the system would have to intervene more to prevent further slipping! It's possible maybe, that you 're confusing the different methods that BMW/audi choose to give feedback to the driver of ESP intervention, with actual wheelspin? Actual severe wheelspin would prevent any acceleration in the wet
NewNiceMrMe
Hmm, you may be correct with that. However, last night the wheelspin definately impacted acceleration away from a junction. I eased off, re-applied gently, yet still it spun. I'm going to drive it with ESP off tomorrow - just to check it out. I might even get the car checked over. Different tyres will then be on the cards if Audi say the set-up is as it should be. Sparky
Hmmm, that does sound odd. Tonight I really wellied it, and yes, as Chav says, it feels like all hell has broken loose, but it really didn't hinder my getaway. The Bora suffered a lot more than my Audi does and I had two of them before I moved over to Audi - both wheelspun a lot. I don't know why one car would behave differently to another - surely it's the same code controlling the car? Could one of the wheel sensors not be happy? (clutching a straws here!) NewNiceMrMe
Just driven all the way up from Northampton with ESP off. However, it was a waste of time because it's been completely dry and sunny all the way. Not single squeak from the tyres, but I know they wouldn't of with ESP on either, it's that dry and there was no need for swift junction getaways. In actual fact, the traffic was remarkably good until I approach the Tyne Tunnel - at which point you'd think 5,000 cars had just dropped out of the sky. NewNiceMrMe
Moving this subject on a little.... Has anyone put winter tyres on an A4 Avant TDi? With the colder and slippier months approaching I'm beginning to think that if I was going to change the tyres I may as well put a special winter tyre on. Ride would be affected, but only marginally. However, with the mileage I'm doing it'd be nice to know I could press the accelerate and go somewhere when the really bad stuff arrives. I am specifically thinking about the tyres linked below in 245/45/17 size. Michelin Pilot Alpin Winter Tyres

bravog
I fully sympathise with this wheelspin issue - it's something I have all the time with my 130 Tdi Avant, and is something I drive around. Mine is the five speed model and I am sure first gear is too low for most situations. This is compounded by the abrupt torque band at 1700rpm. To make a swift getaway you have to finely judge the revs and clutch or the ESP cuts in. Funny thing is when the ESP cuts in I tend to react by backing off too much end up back out of the power band and pulling out really slowly in front of fast moving huge trucks . After almost three years of it I still get caught out sometimes in the wet but usually I am on top of it. The BMW 320d I test drove didn't suffer the same beacause it didn't have the same abrupt power band. Next time round I want a quattro again... which brings me nicely too my other point... winter tyres. I live in the north east of Scotland where we have winter . Most normal/summer tyres performance deteriorates when the temperature is less than 10degC, and by 5degC grip is well off it's best. For me a decent set of winter tyres has always been a requirement (back when I was skiing every weekend I used to run studded tyres on a rear wheel drive car with a couple of paving slabs over the back axle). When I ran a quattro car I found that whilst running winter tyres was not strictly as necessary (I never got stuck in the snow) the confidence and feel you get from running a modern silica tread winter tyre in frosty conditions cannot be underestimated. Sitting in my garage at present is last years set of Pirelli 210 Snowsport - I found these quite cheap, and as not many tyre places do winter tyres I found www.johnsonstyres.com very usefull as they import from Germany where many drivers use winter tyres. Most places in the UK stock Verdesteins which I have always found to be a bit While all those BMW drivers with fat low profile tyres are getting their cars towed out of other peoples gardens I'll be quietly smirking to myself as I cruise past. Why more people don't use winter tyres is beyond me - I'm sure there would be less stupid accidents in the winter.
Chav
Never had any problems in grit, sludge or snow with normal tyres! Have seen plenty of cars spin off the road right infront of me though... Think there were 4 or 5 last year I saw, including 2 focus's and a BMW! I think people forget to steer gently! NewNiceMrMe
Well I've decided I'm going to put a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin's on it. Incidentally, for those that questioned my haste off the mark...if that was the case then why wouldn't I have experienced such bad traction in any of the other cars I have owned and driven over the years?! I see Chav's point regarding being able to manage on standard tyres and I can't dispute I'e always done so over the last 20 years of driving. However...the winter set won't do any harm for the trips I'll be doing and indeed they can only make the car react even better in bad conditions.
