chrisrose
Agree on avoiding the French makes and not having a car in Clifton or Redland (car crime capital of the country I believe). Have also owned 2 Astras - were both pants and have probably put me off buying another Vauxhall - except maybe the Monaro! Bought the GTI as it is great to drive and could not find another car I liked more for the money. Anyway what do I know - I cycle to work.

MattR32
Gotgit - So do I - This morning there was a MASSIVE rock fall on my route (Avon path opposite the Portway). Luckily no one was around but one boulder must have weighed three tonnes or more and has smashed right through the "boulder fence". Doh! Car for the odd business trip and weekend fun. Astras WERE pants and I have always hated them. For me to now be driving one means they have suddenly got better - A lot better. Only taken Vauxhall about 30 years to get it right though. R32North
Value for money it would have to be the Astra, as a complete package it whips the others but having seen it tested and read some reviews about the way it puts its power down and handles, I'd not buy one! GTi - too expensive and dull (ish) for a GTi, to look at. A3 2.0T - way to expesnive for what you get, so I'd not actually buy any of them. Probably should be another option on the list / poll! malagus
we have an MK4 astra, and it is really good IMO. the 1.6 8v isn't sluggish, and the whole package seems sorted. The new VXR looks great IMO, and more individual than the others, and you can probably get a good discount, making up for the residual shortfall. [/ QUOTE ] Doubt it mate, because there's limited numbers I think you'll do well to get much money off. When I bought my Astra 888 coupe (similar ltd edition thing) a few years ago I only managed a few hundred quid off and that was only because I'm in the trade and good friends with the dealer. I would imagine you'll be able to pick a VXR up pretty cheap when they're about a year old though, I lost £5000 on my 888 in 10 months
RedRobin
1) - Golf GTI 2) - Audi A3 2.0T 3) - BMW Series 1 (hot version) 4) - VX Astra VXR Actually there are other cars I'd buy before the VXR. I don't care two poos about 'residuals' and I've never driven the Astra VXR or the A3 2.0T, though I have driven other Vauxhalls and Audis. MAstra (I think) started talking about "class" and "style". Regardless of how fast/good-value/features etc etc etc the Astra has, no Vauxhall will ever have "class". Bentleys have class, Rollers don't....Ferraris do, Lambos don't....Morgans and Ducattis do, anything Japanese doesn't....BMWs do, Fords don't. Get the drift? Of the three, Audis have more class but the Golf (not Volkswagens) is well established as smart and discrete (both signs of class). However, being the classiest and most stylish doesn't necessarily make it the the best. Yes, there is a strong element of what's called badge snobbery and "class" is all about status and hierarchy in Western society - Whether right or wrong morally it's an indisputable fact. Yes, the VXR has distinctive design styling, as do things chav, but "style" it ain't got. The Ritz in Madrid has style, The Hilton anywhere doesn't....Annabel's has it, Stringfellows doesn't....Riva boats have both style and class....Need I go on? Which is the better car of the three depends entirely on what suits the individual for their own variety of very valid reasons and it doesn't make one better than the other two. Guess which I chose....
Chins
Well Ive ditched my dull and boring MK V GTI (with poor residuals) and got something with balls on order - VXR. Looking forward to it like a kid in a candy store. Driving a 10 year old Golf GTI whilst waiting, but have not missed the MK V at all - Dull is the best word for the MKV. All I can think is that the journalists present in the room on launch must of been huge as the write ups I'm sure are for another car, not the sleepy GTI
Woppum
I thought you raved about the Gti, now its dull and boring! Maybe you just get tired quickly!
Chins
Your right, damn nice car, very good at what it did, better performance than my R32, but no switches flicked - sold to a hairdresser

Woppum
This has been discussed before, I think chins had one of the first, and if it was anything like mine was b4 the v4 update and remap I can well believe the Gti is faster. The R now could leave it for dead...
Riz
I think that its safe to say that some R32`s were Friday lemon cars.... Anybody remember that silver one? Mine was 100% wonderful... Riz
Woppum
Smudges yeah. I havent had much luck with mine either. I just can't bear to get rid, its such a luverly motor and tickles all the right places Even leaving it for a CSL worries me I may not be making the right decision! zoomx3
Yep, the car is indeed an extension of one’s persona. It might even be driven to have others see us as we want them too. So when vw came out with the gti, I grabbed it! it has all the traits I wanted, low key yet classy, subtle while exuding quality. Bmw screams “wannabe” and real estate agent, Mercedes says, “im old rich snob”, audi is bohemianly upwardly mobile – nice, however I feel it borders on snobbish. I still think I’m young, so VW suits me like a peach. The vxr will be pitched as a holden in Australia and great as a car as it may be, I do not want to go anywhere near being associated with the Holden crowd. Im a little too uppity for that. Pardon. MattR32
Yeah, my R32 was a good one too - After v6364. Robin - I get what you're saying but have to disagree with a few items - Ferrari classy and Lambo not?! Funny how many of you place SO much importance on the image you want to portray (or not) - I'm fortunate to have grown up enough to judge a car purely on it's merits.
