Waitey
Hi all I have just started experiencing problems with my indicators, when i indicate the lights flash sometimes once or twice or not at all. I have read on previous posts that this could be down to the relay which is part of the hazard warning switch, which costs about £15. Is it easy to fit if so how. Just a further point when i am sat in the garage and try the indicators i they work more often could this be something else rather than the relay. Thanks in advance Bigal
ktuludays
I think you may be right with the your diagnosis. Sounds like the relay is on its way out. Not sure where it is located I will look in my haynes manual later and let you know. What year and model is it?
Waitey
Hi mate its a X reg SEL 1.8T Thanks Bigal
mulkbear
Yes sound very much like a faulty hazard switch, very easy to replace
ktuludays
Hi mate. Just looked in the haynes for you and the relays are located behind the trim panel next to the steering column. Picture in manual is pretty vague but i think it is to the right and down. Operate your indicators and you should hear the relay click when it operates. If it is intermittent in operation try giving it a light tap to check if the contacts are sticking. I would imagine that your fault lies here. Let me know how you got on. Waitey
Thanks for replies is the relay not part of the hazard switch or am i talking Sh*te.
ktuludays
It is certainly part of the circuit but not part of the switch. A simple continuity check of the hazard switch when removed and operated would tell you if it was working ok. This would aid your fault finding mate. Rustynuts
Not sure about the Passat, but in the Golf and Bora, the indicator relay is incorporated into the hazzard flasher switch.
Wobby
My 2001 Passat has the relay intergrated into the hazard switch. Not sure with an X reg.
Waitey
When the indicators or hazard lights flash the clicking noise comes from the Hazard switch.
Rustynuts
Then the relay is in the switch. Common fault on Golf / Bora so probably on your Passat aswell.
Waitey
Thanks all will get new switch from stealers. Although its amazing how many new friends i have made without, people beep their horns and wave (usaully with two fingers)
Wobby
Yep, thats the relay then, built onto the back of the switch. On mine i lifted a piece of dash (to the right of the switch) so i could get my hand behind (had to remove a couple of screws) and then pushed the hazard switch forwards so it slides out of the front of the dash. If its the same relay as mine i can post you one to try if you want? It didn't fix the problem i had so i now have a spare. If it fixes it you can keep it, if not, stick it back in the post and i will keep it as a spare. I will post a pic when i get chance, but i think they will be differant on your model? I think relay/ switch was about £15 from a dealers Hope this helps
Waitey
Thanks Wobby its really appreciated, i will see if i can get one first, did yours not have the same problem then? Again thanks i will let you know how i get on.
Wobby
No, differant problem. On mine the relay chatters for no reason. The indicators always work fine! The chattering stops if you turn them on. Only thing it could be now is the indicator stalk (or wiring). Not changed it as i was/ still am going to fit cruise control and its on the same stalk.... kill 2 birds with one stone I would get the relay out and move/ check the wires see if it could be a loose wire. Try the wiring onto the indicator stalk as well, just see if it could be a bad connection or broken wire. Then try the indicator, i am away for a few days this weekend. But if you've not got a relay (and i can find my spare and it fits!!!!) Your welcome to try it. Better to try one than do what i did and end up with spares and still have the problem
karlosthejackal
Hi Wobby Will be interested to know how you get on with fitting cruise control, as I had it on both my 1.8 se and v5 passats and miss not having it on long journeys. Please keep us posted when you get around to it
