A4 Avant

Just about to take the plunge with a '98 R 2.4 SE Auto. It's got leather, climate and full Audi history and only 2 owners from new. Only has 1 key so it seems I've got a bill for about £150 for a new one from the stealer. Also the Owners Handbook is missing. I guess that's ebay then for the book.

It's booked for cambelt, water pump and other drive belts on Friday for which I've been quoted £350 from an indie.

Anything else I should be looking for?

It seems a lot of car for the money (£4k) and will save me putting miles on my 911. Looking at about 40k over the next 3 years which would cost me a fortune in depreciation putting those miles on the Porsche. If I have to throw the Avant away at the end I should be quids in.

Any advice on the new car would be appreciated.

whats the mileage on it? check the rear wheel bearings cos i'm looking at a £250 bill for them. look out for any knocking when decelerating from high speeds. exhaust could be out of alignment. check the doors line up with the dash and don't hang down cos that p#$$@d me off when i got mine, got it sorted but it was a pain.

75k miles which, as far as all the checks I have done, spoken to both previous owners and Audi Main Dealer who did all the servicing, is genuine. From the invoices it had a new rad fitted at 72k during it's last service.

Interior is very clean and straight and I didn't notice any untoward knocks, shakes or bangs during the test drive which was heavy traffic then a blast up to 85 (alledgedly)

I could feel the auto box change down, when coming to a stop, in the lower gears but other than that is was very smooth and the engine seems pretty lively. Not a 911 but good all the same.

I will probably have the autobox oil and filter done when the cambelt is being done on Friday. I know many manufacturers suggest gearbox oil is for life (do Audi?) but it must be worth the relatively low outlay to change it at 80k.

Thanks for the welcome and hopefully as I get more experienced I can contribute to the forum.
