Snail
[ QUOTE ] Does make me slightly wonder - New Focus ST (would have to be the ST2 or ST3) or 3 year old R32? Hmmmm.... [/ QUOTE ] Didn't the Focus come just under the R32 on the lap times, when it was wet and foggy?

CarMad
MMmm impressive. Add to that its a lot cheaper and its a great option for some. I think I would look at a nice blue one. Only a few years till I change mine. I will have to wait.
MattR32
Focus got a tad over 1m34, the R32 got 1.33.3.

We have bought a Performance Blue ST2 3dr and wil be looking at the paintwork very carefully p.s. can't believe there are so many badge snobs here on TSN I've had plenty of very nice cars and don't really care about the badge - just the car and the dynamics

TSN is the very essence of badge snobbery! Most would rather have a 1.6 A3 than a Focus ST! I have gradually been trying to educate them but few will listen - I tried all sorts including Audis, VWs and BMWs when I was forced to sell the R32 (vandalism) and was much more impressed with a Vauxhall! NBice purchase - Reckon it will be lots of fun. I'm looking forward to a test drive soon.

Go for a good car that doesn't have an Audi / VW or BMW badge on it and you may as well set yourself on fire to some on TSN. Not all I know. I just like good cars after I have driven them / if they have the right ingredients. Let us know what its like and post some pics when you get it Gareth. Sparky
Furry muff, but after seeing it on TV, I really don't like the look of it. Doesn't seem as agressive as the first ST.

NewNiceMrMe
I've driven a Focus RS (a good while ago) and thought it was absolutely awful. However, the Focus ST looks much better and sounds much more driveable too. I know it's wrong to tar everyone with the same brush (unless they're a Civic Type R driver of course) but every Focus RS I have ever seen has been getting thrashed to death and driven like the owner in on a suicide mission. I just hope the ST doesn't get tarnished with the same image.

[/ QUOTE ] Funny that! Every Focus RS I've seen has been driven sensibly and polished to the max, maybe because most people that own them are RS enthusiasts and it's their pride and joy. Although you say that the RS you drove was awful, and everyone has a right to their own opinion, couldn't it be more to do with the fact that hot-hatches just don't appeal to you anymore? I mean,I can't imagine getting out of an M3 and raving over a Focus RS,let alone jumping from the cockpit of a 6 series into the same and being over impressed. Just a thought. MattR32
Well pretty much every Golf GTi (all marks) and TDI Golfs and A3 TDI I've seen get driven by pillocks who seem to think they are faster than anything in the World. It's easy to make poor excuses for not liking a car when it's really just badge snobbery.

MattR32
I do have anti French car feelings but that's after owning one for 18 months and seeing them at the bottom of every reliability survey every year. Nice to drive, tragic to own.

Nice to drive, tragic to own. [/ QUOTE ] Yep,in general you are right. The only two I've had in the last 5 years are the Activa which was reliable as clockwork even though I drove it hard for tens of thousands of miles and a BX16v which was also very reliable covering the same sort of ground(40k+ in 12 months in each). They are quite specialist cars though,so maybe it's just because previous owners have spent the money maintaining them to high standards and I reaped the rewards. chrisan
[ QUOTE ] It's easy to make poor excuses for not liking a car when it's really just badge snobbery. [/ QUOTE ] But can I ask what is wrong with preferring one badge over another? If I prefer an Audi badge over a Ford badge, am I labelled as a badge snob? This is my first Audi following a long list of "high end" Fords, including ST's. I can categorically say, hand on heart, that nothing Ford has ever done or is currently doing comes even close to the build quality of this A4. I still have an appreciation of Fords so don't consider myself a badge snob.
MattR32
I think badge snobbery USED to have it's place - Audis and VWs genuinely WERE better made but now I think it's plain daft. My worst current example is those who pay well over £20k for a Saab 9-3 - A Vectra in drag and from reports I've heard (and wife's uncle has one) they are not half as well made as the VX and are slower. It took me a good testing of everything German when I sold the Golf to "discover" how daft badge snobbery is.

F E C K Went to see the car today after reading the thread here and on the Ford Forum. I looked at "my" car and another Blue ST as well as the ST in Orange. Made sure that they were in both the natural light and showroom light. And..yes the front bumper plainly is darker than the rest of the bodywork. The rear is totally fine and blends in, but the front does not when looked at side on and at an angle. Looking straight on it almost looks "ok" but anything less than straight on the front bumper has a very much darker tone than the rest of the paintwork. So having moved heaven and earth to get the car/deal this week it looks like I will be better walking away. There is no way anyone should buy a brand new car knowing it's going to need paintwork to be "perfect" as a new car should. Appreciate it's difficult to explain without seeing it yourself but has anyone else experienced this with their paint on a brand new car? What were the issues? Could it be remedied or not? Obviously paint on plastic works differently to paint on metal...but not to the degree I saw today. Big question is "Feature" or "Fault" I guess ?? Sparky
Fault. I know it must be annoying for you, having gone to the lengths you mention, but you'll always know that it's not right at the front, and I'd bet that would continue to annoy you once you've paid good money for it. ChadW
Do you get this colour change on the Sea Grey? After seeing it on the TV and pricing up an ST2 then I think its good value if anything, well apart from my insurance quote for it!

But then again, for a £15K NEW car, it shoudl be right. Heart saying 'don't worry, sign, sign, sign!!!' Head saying 'that will pi55 you off all through ownership, as you know it is wrong'.
