harminder
Hi Only just brought a mark 4 golf 1.8T for the wife a few days ago and noticed that when I start the car cold it makes a funny noise Basically the noise does not happen when the car is warm or has been running for a while. The noise is hard to describe but here goes: You turn the engine on and the car starts up fine and then 1-3 seconds later it sounds like a rattling noise... A little like it does when someone turns the key to start a car that is already on but louder!! I did think it was the starter motor and thought may be the wife is turning the key for too long but nope! Also I noticed the oil was low in the car (exactly at the min level) so will top up today and see if it could be a lack of oil going to the engine or something? Any other ideas? pritesh
hmmm hard to say .... any idea where the noise is comming from within the engine bay area?
harminder
Cant really tell exactly where in the engine bay its coming from.. Will have a good listen tonight when I get home and will let you know! Also another point, I noticed that when the engine gets just a bit warmer and I start it again the noise does not last as long..until eventually after starting it 6-7 times (and let it run for 10 seconds each time) the noise just stops! Just wandered if low oil means the engine is kind of grinding upon start up? Also noticed the coolant level was a little low in the car and so topped that up this morning... pritesh
that is possible...some of the techy guys should be along soon...im sure they can shed more light on the area! but it is possible due to low oil!
mulkbear
It sounds like the oil pick up is blocked with crap and not supplying alot of oil to Cam chain tensioner. Or it could be the cam chain tensioner sealers have gone. If it is the oil pick up blocked, Book time 2 hour's plus , Oil pick up + seal Sump seal Oil Oil filter Or if it is the Cam chain tensioner Book time 5.5 hour's plus Cam chain Cam chain tensoiner Cam cover seal (Cam belt) (Cam belt tensoiner) (can be changed at the same time.) or it could be another fault but i have done alot of these. They seem to be common on 60k plus engines
harminder
The car I have brought as done nearly 55k.. Was hoping to get the cambelt changed at next service but might now put it in a bit earlier! Does this mean that the cam belt can also snap? I have a feeling you could be right about the oil pick up being blocked... Any ideas on prices would be great for both situations
mulkbear
I can never say if a cam belt is going to snap but i would have it changed at 60k, VW recommend 80k or 8 years but to be on the safe side !
Tobes49
Have a oil change and make sure they use a good quailty filter with a 1 way return valve in. Any bosch, mann, ketch or VW filter will be fine.
harminder
OK put oil in the car last night...and then drove it around for a few miles.. Left the car parked for two hours in the cold and then started it up...........no noise!! Then thought I would double check and so tried starting the car up from cold this morning after it had been parked up all night! Yep........the bloody noise was back! Basically I need to get the car sorted but dont want to pay out huge amounts... How about if I book it in for an oil drain & change, change the oil filter and then get the oil pick up pipe cleaned with an air line? Can I get all this done for under £100 and is it the right way to go?
Skidmark
As tobes said, it sounds like the none return valve in the filter [ie not there ! ] so a new filter [with valve] and oil is the 1st step cheers

harminder
Just to let you know: Took the car to the dealers....I had to drive it a few miles and so hoped it was still cold enough for the technician to hear.. Anyway started it up a few times and nothing At this point I said to him it sounds a bit like the starter motor is being turned on while the engine is running.. Now tried it again a few more times (by now thinking the car must be quite warm)..and then suddently grrrrrrr Grinding noise was back..........technician pointed straight to the starter motor and said that was the cause.. He said it looks like its sticking and could be on the way out...said it was probably best to get it refurbed but will probably last some time yet.... Also believed that as the starter motor gets worse the noise will last longer.. Just wandering if this sounds about right?
