Smiddy
Hi all, well the A6 has hit 59K miles and I had it almost a year now and in the space of a week its racked up a £746 bill for service and new tyres and even though its been a nice car to drive and own I want to get rid of it early next year before I starts loosing too much money on it. It's hard to decide what to get next though, Im not too sure on a budget for the next one yet it maybe around the 17-18k mark depending on how much I can get on trade in on the A6. I'm thinking about an A4 either the 1.9TDI or the 2.0TDI (depends what is about at the time) or maybe even switching to petrol. my questions for you guys are what kind of mpg would i be looking at the 1.9 and 2.0 tdi's and also the 1.8T petrol and are there any things I should know or look for with the A4 before buying one? thanks for any help
Al_H
Here are the details you wanted. 1.8T : - urban 24.8 - extra urban 43.5 - combined 34 1.9 TDI: according to 1999/100/EU in mpg - urban 37.2 - extra urban 61.4 - combined 49.6 2.0 TDI: according to 1999/100/EU in mpg - urban 35.3 - extra urban 60.1 - combined 47.9 Id recommend the 2.0 TDI diesal, the best of those three. Dont get the 1.9 TDI its only 115 bhp and is pretty gutless in an A4. To find the rough trade in value of your A6 got to http://vauxhall.co.uk/ on the top tab click owners then value your car from the sub menu. SJC1975
1.8T are much, much cheaper second hand and you can easily get 40mpg driving around town! Depends on how many miles you do!
UBM
The 2.0TDI is great. Like above, don't bother with the 1,9TDI - unless its a 130BHP B6. The fuel economy I'm getting on mine is bout 42-43mpg, but thats spanking it every trip!
Al_H
Theres a nice Red 1.8 T S Line for sale on this website. I think it belongs to a member called Frodo, its priced at 18k ish i think.
Chav
[ QUOTE ] and you can easily get 40mpg driving around town! [/ QUOTE ] not! I get better mpg around town in the 3.0 than I ever did in the 1.8T. You'd have to be very light footed and never spool up the turbo etc... pretty difficult in a manual car

Although its not an A4 my wifes VW Sharan 1.8T normally gets 29-30 and she isint a fast driver. You would struggle to get 40.
Smiddy
Thanks for your replies I must admit the 2.0 TDI sounded the most tempting i get to drive one on tuesday while my car is in for its service.
Milo
If you're going for a B7, avoid the 1.9 Tdi as it's only 115 PS. My 130PS 1.9 Tdi has returned about 41 mpg over 23,000 miles (2 years and 8 months) but that has been 75% urban pootling. Take it on a long run and happily enjoy mid 50s mpg. If it's a Tdi, it has to be the 140PS 2.

gizze
I have found that every Audi I have owned has always given me a figure between Audi's urban and combined figures.
Milo
I found I get about 80% of the claimed combined because of the type of journeys I do (the last 3 cars I've had have back this up)

Sparky
I've just had a B7 2.0 TDI Multitroic for the day, and usually drive a manual 1.9TDI (130). I found that the newer 2.0 TDI (140) is smoother with the delivery of the power. The 1.9 therefore feels like you're off the mark quicker, and you probably do get up to speeds a little more promptly perhaps, but the 140 keeps going a little longer and feels nicer and is much quieter, even when spanking it. I'd certainly rate the 1.9TDI (130) on a B6, but a 2.0 on a B7. Also, I didn't like multitronic (well, the automatic part) at all, but that's probably just me! My choice would be a manual B7 A4 2.0 TDI S-line if I wasn't going over to Petrol.
Smiddy
Thanks sparky, I do like the look of the s-line TDI and the 1.8T S-line, I would be switching from an A6 2.5 V6 TDI auto (SE 163) and I do like how smooth it is, you dont feel any gear changes so going to a 1.9 or 2.0 tdi is bit of a difference. Sparky
On the multi 2.0 TDI, in auto mode, you don't feel the changes. Very smooth
Mitchet
Hmm, I'm looking to take a step down from my A6, and have been looking at the A4 1.9 TDI 130, although I have been wondering what the performance is like on the 130 TDi, especially with tiptronic? UBM
Welcome to TSN! Sounds like a step up to me..... If you're taling a B6, the 130 Sport would be good. Remember the B7 has an extra 10 PS's at 140PS!

Smiddy
well the A6 is in for its service today I got the 55plate A4 2.0TDI Avant at the moment, first impressions when I first set eyes on it was not as big as i thought, couldnt quite fit everything in the boot that was in the boot of the A6 but probably would of if i had packed it different. getting in the car wasnt as comfortable as the A6 but wasnt uncomfortable, then being a car for other people to use i wasnt expecting too much, stearing wheel was nice, smaller then the one in my A6 which I liked, had the alu. trim but the interior was a light grey so didnt realy look right. Driving the car, it was a manual and iv been driving an auto for the last year but no stalls yet putting my foot on the clutch it went down quite far infact my leg was almost fully stratched (yes i know im only 5ft9) but i have got used to it already, the engine is very nice and responsive I drove from taunton to a customer in bristol so i got to have a play with it on the motorway was nice and smooth and not very noisy, I have just got back from bristol and took the backroad, over took some people which the car didnt have a problem with, felt very lively. overall was a nice drive and going back to manual didnt seem to bother me, was like riding a bike you dont forget, so yes I am impressed with it overall, was lively when you put your foot down, MPG wasnt too bad seeing as the car has only done 3k so im definatly thinking about one of these for next years buy now, just waiting on the call now to go and get mine. UBM
I'll second that - mine was a little more than that, but it has got some extra bits..... Glad you enjoyed the 2.0TDI avant experience!
