Woppum
Of course... The R32 is still a replacement for the 4-motion, and is still in a catagory of being a like a GTI right.. But in performance terms it is the VW M3 (Sorry, couldnt resist )
s4dreamer
[ QUOTE ] The R32 is a huge improvement over the 4-motion, no question, but it was kind of a replacement for it. [/ QUOTE ] Not really Ari. The R32 is what the 4-mo should have been in the first place, but VW's marketing f'ed up and out popped the 4-mo. It's a nice car for what it is, but it ain't no high-performance machine like the R32 or S3. The 4-mo is still in production, so you can't really say that the R32 replaces it any more than the M3 replaces the 330Ci, except in the fact that the M3 was never (to my knowledge) an afterthought. Woppum
I think the initial idea for VW was to make the R32 to replace the 4-mo, but it seems they will probably end production together in the end. So in fact it is not a replacement, and it is the best sporting VW. Sorry Ari i cange my mind again, i didnt realise the 4-mo was still in production. The GTI is like the top of the "normal" Golf range, with the R32 a breed apart. Oh hang it, I'm confused now, and anyway apparently the 4 motion is still in production so I'm talking bollox anyway!!! I'll revert to my original comparison. BMW 330i = A3 T-quattro. BMW M3 = Audi S3 VW R32, err, no idea, but bloody brilliant if you want to go jolly fast! But all the above massively flawed by the fact that the roof won't fold (unless you get the convertible version of the 330i/M3 of course!) Hows that? Colin M
Back in summer 2000, Audi were heavily promoting the new A3 1.8TQ so I went down to my local dealer and had a test drive. We sat talking about prices and there were some options that were a must have for me (leather etc). This brought the price up to around £23k. The dealer then mentioned the S3 and we went for a drive. The car was so different from the A3, I decided to drop the A3 idea and go for an S3. At the time Audi UK were charging £27k for it and I imported my first one from Denmark at around £20k, my second from Germany at £21k (Danish source dried up). Sport Import was born and the rest is history.
Frodo
Just a quick Q for all the S3 drivers. I am thinking of getting a second hand S3 in the next few months (I started off thinking about a 1.8T Sport but have changed my mind becuase of this site). How driveable is the S3 over distances, for example the Elise is great fun to drive but any longer than 30 mins and it becomes uncomfortable and no pleasure. What is the S3 like to drive around town in rush hour or a 2 hour journey down the motorway? TIA Paul
A3Floyd
No probs at all. In fact, the extra torque makes motorway driving a pleasure. The suspension is stiff but you'll not notice it much on the motorway and in town it still feels fine. I drive a 50 mile round trip every day to work and i also spend most weekends in London and i still love mine. Just a little hard to drive slowly around town, sometimes but great for the traffic light grand prix's!!! The S3 is a very comfortable car. zartara
I work in insurance too, if you squeekly clean your best off with the likes of DirectLine and Tesco for cheapness. Your gonna have trouble with S3's and convictions though, then your looking at HotHatch specialists which can be pricey. The best trick is as suggested add an AD with a clean licence & claims history that normally does the trick. Oh and don't get window tints like me their a b*tch to get covered
