Cayman and Boxster back to back

Right guys - I'm a newbie on here so treat me gently...

Been waiting patiently to make my first post on here and today I went for a spin in a Boxster S followed by a Cayman S at my OPC and thought it only appropriate to let you guys (and gals) know the result. It was certainly a shock for me..

First off, i can't say how much of a fan of the Boxster i am. My old mate DHA 169144-ok.gif has let me have multiple rides in his (multiple) Boxsters and I have singularly loved all of them. So today I set out with the intention of buying one - and I wasn't disappointed. The ride (with PASM) was pliant in town and firmed up suitably on the open road. With Sport selected the nose was bobbing around nicely but I found the Normal setting to be a great compromise - perhaps Sport is a trackday only setting? Anyhow, when I got back to the OPC I was grinning form ear to ear. The chequebook was already out...

However, purely for the benefit of research, I also took the cayman S out for a run on the same 35 minute local circuit. Now, I 've got to be honest, having just driven my dream car, I was just expecting a Boxster with less wind noise. I couldn't have been more wrong. From the off the car felt completely different. The 3.4 has a totally different character to the 3.2 in the Boxster, more swirly and less smooth at low revs. When I got the chance to open it up, the top end howl as you go through 5000 revs had me not paying attention to the traffic but just revelling in the induction roar. It was the most beautiful noise I've heard in a car.

The turn in felt more immediate in the bendy bits and there was an element of body control that even the mighty Boxster lacked. I'm no driver, but everything I could throw at the Cayman, it took, chewed it for a mo then spat it back at me. I was truly amazed. By the time I was half way around, I knew it was the one for me...

I know a lot of press has been written about the Cayman (Coxster) but Porsche have engineered a car with a completely different character to the Boxster, and good on them for that. To my mind, the Boxster S was the smoother, more comfortable car, had the added bonus of the retractable roof and was the better everyday proposition. But I was sucked in by the extra torque, noise and immediacy of the Cayman. It's got a well dodgy ar$e but oh boy can it go. FIREdevil.gif

Stealer said that I may be able to get into one by May/June as he knows of one owner who has said his circumstances have changed and is considerign backing out (or he doesn't like the rump!)

Currently in a Golf GT TDi - great for living in London but the noise ain't quite the same...
