Milo
I've ordered my car with xenon plus headlights (not adaptive) but I've got a couple of (daft?) questions. The lights some with 4 explanations Xenon for dipped and main beam Pretty self explanatory Daytime driving lights What exactly are these? Is it just a fancy name for halogen sidelights? Headlamp washer system Is this linked into the window washers or is it on a separate system? Automatic range adjustment What is this and how does it work? The DTM I test drove had "AUTO" on the light selector as well as sidelights and dipped. Is that only if you also opt for auto dimming rear view mirror with light and rain sensors? Thanks in advance
Tizzy
I can have a go at the last two: - Headlamp wash is linked to the washers, on my S4 (B6 of course) it washes the lights (if they're on)if you give a slightly longer pull on the stalk. Uses loads of water and doesn't seem to clean much grime off either! - Auto range adjustment - I think this might mean the auto levelling - which it does when you turn the lights on each time (they go up and down a couple of times as they assess the loading & angle of the car) However I'll stand corrected if this means something else! - Finally mine has the auto dip inside & outside mirrors (very good they are too) and if the switch is left on the AUTO setting, it turns the lights on/off when it's dark/light. Also has a light up your driveway function, which is nice........
nicknick
Not sure...but maybe Daytime driving lights is what the Americans call DRL (Daytime Running lights ?)or in English lights on at all times as most Volvo's have (although not unmarked police volvos that I have seen for some reason)
Paul
Xenon for dipped and main beam in other words Bi-Xenon. 1 bulb and a electrically operated shutter that changes beam pattern . Daytime driving lights I would assume these would be sidelights like volvos use. Thats what they usually refer to. But i am not sure why they would mention this. Unless they have a specific halogen light for daytime use , that isnt the intense xenon one. Headlamp washer system a prolonged pause on the washer stalk when lights on will operate the headlight washers, required for xenons by law. Automatic range adjustment Sensors on the suspension send information to the auto leveling ecu to tell them where to aim the lights, which are moved by motors. The lights are constantly being adjusted as you drive, and acording to the load in the car. Requied by law for Xenons.
Milo
Thanks chaps The daytime driving lights is a puzzler - I don't fancy having permanent sidelights on Volvo/Saab style. I think I'll give the dealer a call
gizze
You can get them to turn them off during the PDI. Also the washer will not work when your washer warning light comes uo to tell you you need to refill, which is a nice little touch.
Paul
[ QUOTE ] The daytime driving lights is a puzzler - I don't fancy having permanent sidelights on Volvo/Saab style. [/ QUOTE ] Im equally intrigued by what they mean, an i am in the lighting trade! I cant recall seeing Audis with lights on in daytime like Volvo inflict on all their owners. might be a softer user switchable halogen light, for daytime, but thats a guess. Lighting has changed alot recently. Bi xenons turn lights (extra halogen lighting of corners as you turn) adaptive lighting with moving projectors within the headlights, which work with steering as well as self leveling etc up down left and right. not cheap to replace either! [/ QUOTE ] It's a separate light, brighter than sidelights (as it's got to be visible in the daylight), that goes on when the lights are (off). It's a halogen apart from on the W12 (and upcoming S8) where it's a set of five LEDs in a cloverleaf pattern. Unlike halogens, the LED running lights dim down to become the sidelights when the headlights are on. I don't like the look of halogen running lights, but the W12 looks pretty cool with the LEDs lit, although I'm probably biased!
Milo
Ahah, daytime driving lights sussed. It would appear the lights are as described by Chris_B above (brighter halogens) however they can be turned off There is a pop out button next to the normal light controls as seen below and circled in red. Many thanks to ChrisAn for the tip off (he's got xenon plus on his new A4)

[/ QUOTE ] I had wondered how they would be turned off without MMI (in the A8, and I presume the new A6, it's in the exterior lighting menu along with full beam restrict with automatic lights, and coming and leaving home toggle and duration), I had thought possibly dealer diag tool or VAG-COM. A button a is far more elegant solution though; how typically Audi!
Paul
Well that cleared it up My guess was pretty much spot on. Glad to hear they can be turned off.
UBM
Yes, a lot of people in the US have simply removed the DLR bulbs from the B7 with the bi-xenon. Some of them have red and coloured bulbs instead - others a gap! I remember meeting DHR in his new B7 S4 and we had some discussion over the DLR. I guess its some form of European safety standard now?
