LeadFoot
Greetings all! My car seems to have developed a very faint knocking noise. If I'm carrying a passenger they can't hear it unless I mention it to them, it really is that faint! I'm sure it's nothing serious but it's starting to really get on my nerves now! It's coming from inside the car, on the drivers side possibly towards the rear. I was convinced it was the rear seats right up to the point that I had two people in the back but the exact same faint knocking noise could still be heard. Any suggestions or pointers? Anyone suffered a similar thing in their A3? Either that or I'll have to get off my lazy fat backside and book it in at the dealers!
Gren
Is it when you turn a corner or go over a bump?
LeadFoot
No mate, it's just this annoying faint knocking noise. I just can't find the cause of it! I had a real good go at trying to suss it yesterday. One thing I am certain of now is that its coming from the rear offside. I had "she who must be obeyed" listening for where it was loudest while I recreated the sound by bouncing the car very slightly [insert crude joke here]! At one point I was convinced it was the parcel shelf or spare wheel cover but it's not. I took all the tools etc out from around the spare wheel but the noise is still there. I don't even think it's any of the interior panels now either! 'kin frustrating me now! That's the problem with holidays, nowt else to worry about! Booster
How old is your car? There is a known issue with the suspension on earlier 8P models. A number of people have had rear struts replaced. Someone described the noise as sounding like "a rubber ball inside a plastic bottle". Does it sound like that? harddrive
Have you tried strapping in all the seatbelts in the rear of the car? Also I find that some times I get a knocking noise from the boot area but I have not looked into this in any great deal.

Simonl
It's a very common problem on Golf GTI's at the moment. There was a thread in the technical section with the official 'line' from VAG. Apparently they are looking into the problem, changing the drive shaft won't help though. It 's nothing to worry about, it's merely whether the noise is aggravating or not. The VW stealers are advising customers to sit tight until a remedy is found. I think they have also explored the software as a possible problem hope it helps.
LeadFoot
WOW! Once again thanks for all the valuable help folks, very much appreciated, as always! Booster wins first prize, it was the rear shock absorbers! Well done fella! Spent another hour trying to suss out the source of the noise this morning. Finally decided that noise was coming from the area around the vicinity of rear offside wheel and thought it would be best if I took it the dealer after all! The rest of the day panned out as follows: 1. Arrived at the dealers a little after 10am. Asked the young lady behind the reception if I could have a quick word with one of the mechanics. 2. Spoke to their "Master Technician" who sussed the problem in no more than a minute. Basically said exactly what Booster had posted earlier. 3. He informed me that they had the parts in stock and the job would take about 90 mins. He then asked if I could bring the car back at 1.30pm this afternoon. 4. Took car back at 1.30pm. 5.Went for a walk along the nearby river, had a coffee, etc etc returned at 3pm. 6. Was instantly greeted with "Your car's ready for you Sir. Here's the keys. Sign here please. Have a Merry Christmas" 7. Both rear shockers replaced under warranty and no more knocking! How chuffed am I?! My first experience of an Audi service department.....and long may it continue!
