Gaunty Posted January 2, 2006 Report Share Posted January 2, 2006 If it helps (even by simply lifting it to the top of the list for a bit) I've driven a Volvo with lpg conversion and it was aweful, so my recommendation is don't. We only managed 100 miles per tank so even though it was cheaper per litre it didn't make much difference to the running costs. On the other hand I only noticed a slight drop in power from petrol, it wasn't as noticable as I thought it would be. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

kentzer Posted January 2, 2006 Report Share Posted January 2, 2006 I had a vectra on LPG (2.0 16v) for about 12 months and it was great. About 200 miles from a small tank, and a slight drop in power. It did about 35 MPG on unleaded, and about 32 on LPG - with the cost difference I'd have had to get 75MPG on unleaded for it to be as cheap as LPG. I'm in the process of finding a decent v8 Discovery which will be converted to LPG. I can't cope with 18MPG otherwise Cheers Ben Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

kentzer Posted January 6, 2006 Report Share Posted January 6, 2006 The vectra was converted from new - part of the "Dual Fuel" range - so I don't (yet) have any dealings with LPG fitters. A colleague at work's just converted his vectra SRi to run on LPG, and has almost saved the conversion cost already - I think he's about 15 months in on 15-18k a year. If you're going to be doing 30k per year on it, then it's worth getting a quality kit. There are some really naff ones out there. You also MUST get it done by someone that know what they're doing. I live in Derbyshire, and when I get the Discovery it's going to Norwich to be done (RPi Engineering - specialise in Rover V8's). Basically, if you reckon on 30mpg, that's 1000 gallons of fuel, or about 4500 litres. The cost difference of about 40ppl (conservative estimate - it's nearer 50p at some outlets) means that you should have saved almost £2000 after the first year. (Figures might be a bit out - I've got a cold and can't think quite straight - they look about right though). This suggests that if you're willing to wait a year for the savings to start, you can get a tip top kit that should last for years. I've heard some horror stories about cheap kits. On the Discovery, I'm looking at about £2,500 for the conversion, and it'll take me quite a bit longer to realise the savings. I assume you've found www.lpga.co.uk already. If not - have a read through some of the stuff there. www.rpiv8.com's a good place for some background information as well, although they only do the Rover v8 conversion. The v8 engine sound on the link's rather good Hope it all goes well - let us know how you get on. Perhaps we'll get enough interest to start an "LPG" area on here somewhere! A customer i go to used to convert cars to LPG (a company they bought), seemed reasonable. They wern't cheap, and the company closed down before i got it sorted!! I have decided to concentrate on soley factory fit lpg. Diesel is an option but it would not give me anything like 70mpg (lpg equivalent). vmotionw Posted January 12, 2006 Report Share Posted January 12, 2006 i had a jeep, that i had converted to lpg and i must say its the best thing i could have done. i got over 200 miles out of a tank of gas at a cost of just over 22 pounds the convertion cost 2500 pounds to carry out and i get 32 to the gallon gas at half the price (17 on petrol) at present i run a tdi now and its coming up for change time. what am i looking at well its a v6 petrol passat with a gas convertion as i do 25k a year work and 10k private its going to take me just over 12 months to get the cost of the convertion back and over the life of the car (125k miles) change time for me it works out that i should be 2.5k better off than the tdi version with the addition of making the greens happy i can't see why any high miles wouldn't go for gas over the tdi any day well that my pennys worth Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
