Quite right there mate, best fun motor, I ever had was a MK1 long nosed Henry, which had a nice little Rover V8 tucked under ring pull.

Well it was very nice, until I put it through a hedge one night, and a large fencing post came through the floor, and my seat back, stopping a couple of mm from my spine........ EEK2.GIF

So I guess that's why I have been such a huge fan of 4 wheel drive, ever since!!!! SPericani2.gif

In New Zealand, VW have a dealer fit ECU remap from MTM available. Only the stage 1 (180kw, 355Nm) is covered by VW warranty. In NZ the standard warranty is also extended to 3 years (primarily to compete with other marques).

See http://www.mtm-online.de/en/index.php?nav=3&FZID=GOLF5147&Kitnum=MGO5200245FX for details on the specific MTM upgrade covered here.

I think this should be explored further with VAG UK.

From polls conducted a few months ago, it was established that almost 30% (perhaps more now) of us were interested in remaping our GTI's, but were reluctant to do so because of the vagueness of the warrenty situation in the UK.

Does anyone have the details of someone from VAG HQ that this could be raised with. If the New Zealand and German markets are provided with dealer fitted and warrenty covered remap packages, why would the same remap from the same company not be covered on the same product by VAG UK?

Surely this contravenes some equal opportunities legislation somewhere ................... perhaps? confused.gif

In NZ, VAG is imported by a company called European Motor Distributors, who also happen to be the supplier of the said MTM kit. I guess they've decided the risk is low and given GTI owners in NZ the option of an ECU remap without the risk. They also offer it for the new Polo GTI, and various Audi models.

MTM is 'represented' in the UK by QST but, judging by jaysgti's re-mapping experiences there I would advise caution. However, it may well be his car's problem that re-mapping has merely highlighted. Have a read of some of the threads in TSN Tuning forum. DSG seems more prone than manual to any problems when re-mapping.

The VW dealers are potentially piggy in the middle and get badly caught out when trying to prove whether an aftermarket mod is or isn't the direct cause of a warranty issue.

I've personally got to the point where I think that, unless you are regularly driving track days, do you really need more than around 200 neddies on the front wheels of your GTI? All the re-mapped GTIs that I've driven have had additional mods.

Btw, that NZ 'approved' MTM re-map will instantly rack up to another stage if/when you fit Milltek Turbo-back exhaust by an extra of up to nearly 20 bhp.

That's my thinking at the moment too Red. But it's nice to know the option is available if I want it. And it's a low risk one, too. My dealer reckons about 40% of GTI owners have done it, which actually surprises me somewhat. Even now I have no problem getting wheel spin!

Getting wheel spin so easily in typical West Country UK conditions is my biggest issue with the GTI and it's compounded by this being my first front wheel drive car. I hung the back out momentarily this morning while exploring the handling too enthusiastically on a tight greasy corner...I easily got it back and was helped by the ESP but what scared me most was my instinctive and immediate reaction - the same as if I was driving rear wheel drive! I need to go back to driving school and I think that 4WD would reassure me.

Robin, out of interest, have you ever driven a 4wd car?

I don't mean a "Chelsea tractor", but a 4wd saloon or hatch.

If not, and it's wet tomorrow, I think you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Not that the R32 has "proper" 4wd of course.. not like my A4 grin.gif

Of course, the converse argument against 4wd is that the extra confidence means you will be travelling faster when you fall off the road. UHOH7.GIF

I've driven a "Knightsbridge Chariot" rather than "Chelsea Tractor" in spite of the fact that I lived in Chelsea for 20 years! But never a 4wd hatch. Borrowed a friend's Quattro turbo once a looong time ago (130+ on M1, I remember) but it was only one M'way drive where I was taking him to pick up a Ferrari. I'm hoping it will be wet tomorrow and I must admit that the "extra confidence" factor has crossed my mind. We'll see. 169144-ok.gif

So next time the back steps out, what will be your new reaction to put the car back inline?

....Gently tweak the throttle to pull the car forward and steer slightly into it and hope ESP helps out! Marks out of ten?

Strange thing is that inevitably over 40 years of driving I've been in all sorts of sticky circumstances but can never think what I'm doing at the time but I just seem to react instinctively....I must be doing something right. I would benefit from some pro training I expect.

Red, you`re just the same as 99% of us mere mortals who also get out of the sh1t on instinct alone, rather than pure driving skill, and don`t let anyone tell you any different. grin.gif
