NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] It's a well known fact, that the majority of "badge snobs" buy there car's on the drip, at the expense of their sky subscription and various other essential's of life........ [/ QUOTE ] It's also a well known fact that most statistics are made up on the spot....so perhap's you like to enlighten us as to where your 'well known fact' comes from....because I think it's absolute and utter rubbish!!!!!! It's no more of a fact for a 'badge snob' than it is for the buyer of a 'lesser badged' car!!!! In respect of brands slipping the pole, well I'd agree with Mercedes as would most TSN-er's. I'd also agree with Audi climbing the pole, without doubt. However, quite where BMW slipping it comes from I'm not sure, because their sales continue to disprove that theory. The comment was in jest, as well you know and as well the smileys indicated, but it's interesting to see the bites it gets! I'm about as removed from a badge snob as it's possible to get. Yes I drive a BMW, but I also drive an Audi, and whereas my wifes car is a BMW too we have a history of VW's, a Skoda, Ford's and many many more. I buy my cars for the overall package of the vehicle and the service I receive - and the fun or driving experience I want from them. In fact to prove the theory completely - were I in the market for a 'hot hatch' right now I'd buy the best value one out there....an Astra VXR. I've seen one recently and was completely taken by surprise by it. It's nothing like the Chavmobile I thought it would be. In Silver, it looked very nice indeed. I like the GTi, as has been said on many an occasion, but the VXR offers an incredible punch for the money and I was truly impressed with what I saw. ashleywater
I stand corrected on the beemer Mrme, as if you say sales are good, then who am I to argue. I was basing my comments on my own view of the current beemer range and comments expressed by freinds, who used to be beemer officianados! who used to forgo the sky subscrpition to buy one..... The majority dont seem to like the design route BM have taken, I would include myself in expressing that opinion, the being a prime example. My wife looked at both and Audi A3, and plummed for the A3 sportback, as the was just plain ugly! As for the VXR, would agree good value for money, but the torquesteer on lumpy engined FWD vauxhall's has alway's been bad, but this car takes it to new levels, I guess it beats going down the gym, to tone up your arms, but basically you can play: Russian Roulette for the masses, when attempting an overtake........some peoples idea of fun..... yet again who am I to argue.......... ashleywater
Leman Know you know why I like the styling on the MK5 so much! I can actually park it, and not be sweating it, that it wont be there when I get back, always had that concern with the MK4..... The only difference between my R & your gti is that I have to park mine with "Lip gloss" to the front.........

[/ QUOTE ] oops, i think we've upset a BMW driver BMW are in trouble at the moment, more a fact of Chris Bangles radical design direction than brand slippage! They have in recent years become a victim of their own success, as buyers take the "I've had a 3 series, now what can i buy" attitude, it's inevitable that Audi will capitalise on this and people will migrate to different brands, if only to return in later years. NewNiceMrMe
Well the 1-series argument is well known on TSN. Personally I like the car and it's a superb drive (and in many ways I wish I'd got a 120d instead of my A4 Avant). Build materials might be questionable in part, but a few people seem to think this has hit BMW across the range, and it hasn't. Nonetheless, I think the materials should be better in the car. However, tastes are variable of course and it'd be a dull world if they weren't. The design route is controversial, I'd say that. I think the E90 3-series is hideous from the rear, but becoming more attractive from the front as time wears on. However, I still think they've made a mistake with the design. To say that most BMW buyers put their car on 'the drip' purely from your experience of a few friends is a bit much though wouldn't you say? In respect of the Astra VXR, I'm aware of the torque steer issues, what I was getting at was more of a badge point. The car looks nothing like as bad as it has been made out to by many, and I actually found the one I saw very appealing in terms of looks. It had a low and aggressive stance, yet it didn't look overly spoilered or flared. If anything, it had an air of substance to it that a lot of other cars have failed to get a decent balance with. In terms of value for money though I'd maintain that if you could live with the torque steer that it'd the best of the bunch. Anyway, way off topic now. ChrisBuer
I'm surprised there are people here that would opt for a VXR over a GTI or Focus ST. Having had a quick test drive in a VXR (a friend of mine was looking at getting one), I can say that it was truely shocking. Torque-steer for one was very bad, the car didn't handle at all well and the inside styling left a lot to be desired. Even on Top Gear, they showed just how bad the handling was...understeering badly through some of the bends! Bottom line is that the power of the engine is too much for the rest of the car! Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm surprised that people consider this to be a good car?
ashleywater
Well I would'nt entertain either buying an ST or a VXR having driven both, but you have to say that on the: "bang for your buck" equation they are bloody good value for money!! Stealer back up............ mmmhhhhh....non existent down here anyway.....
NewNiceMrMe
There's a difference here though Chris - I didn't actually drive the car, nor did I claim to have. That could change matters dramatically of course.

NewNiceMrMe
Miles and miles and miles away from it. The TSN Nightshift and A4 Cab Meet threads both ran to 69 pages...and this one is on page 10. This is a mere baby of a thread. In terms of the GTi Section, the record is 278 replies HERE. whereas I've just made this 191.
rs32
just thinking the same myself. surely the posts would all have to be related to the topic for the thread to qualify though. oops, I've posted off-topic btw, there's a comparison of the R32 & GTI in todays Independent motoring - they say the R32 is not worth the extra against the GTI, still not sure you can really pit the 2 cars against each other. for me it's worth the extra cash but I wasn't in the market for a GTI anyway. so many conflicting reviews of the new R from journo-land, I'd like to see one taken by a mag as a long-termer but doubt it will happen. That could change matters dramatically of course. [/ QUOTE ] I've driven the VXR, Focus ST and the R32, but oddly not the GTI. My own personal opinion (and not to offend anyone) was that the VXR was truly terrible. Gaudy interior, terrible handling, god awful torque-steer when putting the power on. If you try to take a decent line into a bend and then power out, I found myself having to correct it and hold it to where I wanted it to go….it had a mind of its own! The ST was fantastic! Quick, not too bad inside (nice seats) and had a nice sound to it. Handling wise I didn’t get to really push it that hard, but she felt very solid and capable. Not sure what it would be like in the wet though… The R32 for me was the daddy. Good power, comfortable, lovely sound and great handling…oh and no I’m not going to test the GTI because I’ve already made up my mind and I don’t want to confuse matters

ashleywater
Wonderful description of a powerful vauxhall FWD Chris! The VXR is the mother of Torquesteer, well RS Focus owner's might contend that one, but vauxhall's have always been rather good at it.......... Agree the ST is quite a decent little motor, with a lot of goodies for your wedge, just not my cup of tea though...... Maybe I am a closet "badge snob" then......... Drive a gti Chris, you wont change your mind, unless slower is better for you.......... Time to don my tin helmet,me think's
