Simonl
That's ridiculous Red, The Loders group must have at least one DSG R32. What about Yeovil.
ChrisBuer
Red, I’ve ordered the manual version as I really didn’t enjoy the DSG. I understand that it takes sometime to get used to the DSG, but I can honestly see myself notching it into auto mod most of the time (when I’m not “on it”). The last thing I want to do to my driving is start driving around without thinking about my gear changes. I enjoy practicing my heal and toe, blipping the throttle to match the revs and selecting the correct gear for the situation…sure the DSG does all that for you, but I enjoy doing it myself! RedRobin
Chris - that's absolutely fair enough and every good reason why you should enjoy the manual version. Very wise of VW to give each of us a free choice. Enjoy LeMan - Loders Group only consist of two dealerships and they share the one R32 which I drove. Mollox - You wouldn't be wanting to drive someone else's car without their express permission, would you? Latest is that, while writing this post, I just had a phone call from my offending stealer to say he had sourced one but I would have to travel to where it is. He obviously digested the fact that I wasn't too happy with his earlier response.
Mollox
Absolutely not, try the other end of the stick If I'd discovered that someone had driven my car before I'd even collected it, I'd have rejected the car and had them shot
RedRobin
....That's right! The dealer was right not to let you. I was only teasing you, mate

ashleywater
Hi Red I feel a diatribe coming on folk's.........sorry.... Glad my swiss cheese mind was'nt playing trick's on me.... I was sure I had'nt heard you mention using floor shift with DSG.......... As you remark I also used the paddles, but after hearing the comment: "paddles can be difficult to use when you are really throwing the wheel around" tried it out for myself and yes they can be difficult, not impossible by any means, but being consistent was a problem...... Then the brainwave!!. Cant I use the floor shift too shift!!!! Uh yes you can........... This is definitely the way to drive this car, ultra quick round a twisty road.... flipping awesome...... Chris Ok no heel and toe..agreed..... just the ability to change gears at ridiculous speed under heavy driving.......... And please dont expect stealer staff to know any bloody thing about DSG, as they hop in and out of these cars, and just drive them as auto's, they dont actually own them, none of the guy's at my local stealers could give me any useful information about driving a DSG, in fact I have been rung up by dealer's who I originally enquired with for a car, and when I said it was DSG I was trying to source the reply was: Manual is a much better drive, we just happen to have one in our showroom............curious that???????? Just keep in mind at all times, that stealers and sales staff are there to sell you a car......you are a punter, no more, no less. If you are after DSG and they cant get them, or lead time is long, are you going to wait? or are they going to point you in the direction of a manual which they can source easily........ I rang my stealer Monday and asked if I could get the wife's gti manual spec changed to DSG, the sales guy had a blue fit, saying I could be waiting at least an extra 10-12 weeks for the car.....which would mean sales figures and bonus down for him........... I really would like to know whether the TG power lap was done in a manual or DSG, as if it was a DSG car, I can understand why it was so much quicker than a MK4, if it was a manual I would be interested to see what a DSG would do it in........... Guess we'll never know! just wishful thinking I guess..... So just my humble opinions on DSG V Manual, I understand both sides of the argument, just feel that I was'nt in full possession of the fact's when deciding against DSG initially, felt exactly the same way as most of the comments expressed here for preferring manual........... That view has been pemanently changed.............. I blame Red and Argie for that........thanx guy's......
RedRobin
Having been disappointed in some ways by my first drive in a Mk5 R32, I was very impressed by my ride in Lee's DSG version at Sunday's TSN meet near Brighton. Having a few thousand miles on the clock it felt and sounded much more as I would have expected. Also, the new .:R looks dynamite in Deep Blue Pearl . If I had test driven Lee's .:R I may have been more easily persuaded to convert.
Muppetboy
All of those cars looks feckin brilliant (and I'm no R32 fan but...)! Great photo Red! ps excluding the fiesta...
Tarmac_Terrorist
The R32 front does look classy there. I think it's growing on me. RR - have you photoshopped your tax disc or is it in a dash mounted holder? I always hate seeing those things in the window
JonoNZ
Nice pic Red, I'd love to see a close-up of the deep blue pearl R32!
RedRobin
....Cheers, guys . TT - Tax disc is dash mounted in a black alu Richbrook holder with just a small piece of blue-tack. I've been expecting someone from TSN to notice that for months! It's possibly technically illegal but perfectly visible except when in motion, but who can read a tax disc in motion anyway? Plenty Mr. Plods and wardens have passed by and never (yet!) pulled me. My car also has a subtley graded blue sunstrip. But don't worry, I'm not about to have Sharon and Wayne written on it! RedRobin
I dunno the colour but it's a very dark blue and looks better in the flesh - I'll post a pic of it later but in the Brighton Meet thread. Belongs to rs32 (Richard) - Really nice guy and who organised the meet . Btw, I spent some time with John_Carter yesterday and he's got a Golf Driver for sale. I told him you might be interested so PM him.

faidilah
Have a DSG R32 on loan from VW for 5days... Major wow so far is in terms of that hypnotic engine sound. Begs to be floored. GTI a bit "weedy" in comparison. Looks I am warming to. Noticing that in DSG manual mode it over-rides and flicks up a gear quicker than the GTI. Maybe just my imagination or reaching the limit quicker. Full report to follow after I get back from wherever she takes me this weekend
RedRobin
Test drive for 5 days!!? - Fantastic! I can't see a UK dealer allowing that. How many miles are on her clock (at the start of your loan) ?
faidilah
6000 odd km (or clicks as they say here) Had that wee bit of bother with my own car so they've rather decently given me a long weekend with their press car.
RedRobin
....That's good that she has a decent mileage/clicks on her - It'll give you a better impression of the car. My test drive .:R had only done 250 miles. I have a sneaking feeling that following your report to come, I will be very tempted by the then current generation .:R when it's time to sell my GTI. faidilah
the tempatation i can understand Robin but at 150k Sing dollars (50k sterling) one I will be resisting. my loan vehicle was a 5dr black DSG... warmed to the look of it over the 5 days, in particular when washed and polished up by Mobil's 6 dollar manual wash, but like some women it looks a hell of a lot better from behind. those twin pipes are like bleedin cannons and look the dog's b. 1st impression inside is of one of identical to the GTI except that disco-ball inspired flashy silver trim which is not a good look. i have the impression it is more solid which is probably the result of greater sound proofing from that monstrosity under the bonnet. turn the key and it all makes sense when the v6 rips into life. we're off and after letting it warm up flooring it produces a totally hypnotic licence losing sound that effortlessly brings you up to 140, 160 kmh before you know it. burnt up and down the elevated highway a few times with the windows down just to appreciate it. also took it over the border on sunday up through the deserted expressways of southern malaysia and it's clearly designed for the autobahn. managed to avoid the traffic cops this time ! but hell, it's got a bit of a drink habit, if you watch the dial you can see it guzzling the stuff at a disturbing rate. people tell me it's heavier and the steering is less responsive but i cannot say i noticed that too much. i was able to nip in and out of traffic fairly nimbly and left them all behind for the most part. couple of wrx and evo boys buzzing around but i didn't bother. cornering ability is rock solid and much pleasure in accelerating out of bends to be had with the 4wd, tyres only yelped once. not a hint of wheelspin to be had at any point with esp on. the DSG format works a treat in this car, though i did find one major difference. whilst i tend to do the changes myself in the GTI, i was happier to let the computer do it all for me in the R32. it seemed to flick up itself before i would have been used to doing in the GTI. not sure i can explain why, though it must reach the limit quicker than i am used to in the GTI. or maybe my foot was a little heavier given the 4wd. so in conclusion loved it, just for the sound and the effortless across the rev band acceleration. but it's just not on here in terms of price plus the tax classification of a plus 3 ltr car. see if i can wangle another loan at some point robin, go get one, you know you want to !!
