Forgot to say Robin, at the last Scottish TSN meet there was a Tornado Red 3 door R32, with the Recaros - it looked amazing 169144-ok.gif

Didn't manage to get any pictures though - but can find out if there are any, all you need to do is ask 169144-ok.gif

I have just managed to have a test drive in an R32with dsg, I don’t own a GTI but was given one for the weekend a while ago and wouldn’t commit to buying one until I had a test drive in the R32.

The test drive, well the car I drove was in deep blue pearl and was a 5 door, fully loaded sat nav, leather, parking sensors and a few other extras £30k in total.

Started the car up and the first thing I noticed was how quiet the V6 engine is, so I wound down the window just to hear the noise.

Went on a variety of roads, pulled onto a dual carriage way in 2nd gear at about 40mph and just floored it, god is thing quick or what, it just pulls so effortlessly and the sound is amazing. I drove on a few B roads and was surprised at how agile the car felt, I was expecting the front to push wide on the corners but it was having none of it, it felt so sure footed, it really surprised me. Another thing that I liked was pulling out of junctions and just getting all that power down without any fuss at all, that sold it to me. As for the brakes they are very good too.

This is one hell of a car and I want one, but due to it being a bit more expensive than the GTI I am going to have to save a few more pennies.

Red I know your happy with your GTI but I think you will be amazed at the R32 with dsg I was, its just a shame the GTI looks better.

A few pics below of the one I tested.

Any ideas when the new S3 is out? I've seen several articals saying its going to have the 2.0 TFSI engine with 240/250/260/272 bhp but nothing in concrete. I heard its out later this year but that seems a bit optimistic to me as you cant order one yet.

I was told, when I went into order one, that it would be out early Summer and would have a 2.0T running at 250bhp (iirc). Alas, it doesn't look like either of those claims will be met, although the dealer did show me a bulletin they had from Audi UK stating those stats and launch time. I think the S-Line may have made the S3 look a bit bland imho. Yes, it will be the better car, but imagine the GTI owners rage if the 170 diesel looked very similar to the GTI...

VR6 Vento was never a good seller after that VW did not seem to bother with big versions of the saloon except in the US market.

On the subject of the S3 i can see it been out before the end of this year,

As i would think they would want it out before the 240PS SEAT Leon Cupra comes out early next year (Cupra debut at this years London motorshow in July).

I have heard rumours of september time for the S3 but i would have thought more info would have been out by now if that was the case.

I shld headline this impressions of gti by a r32 driver formerly an mk4 gti 1.8t driver...

frankly i oved the gti. but i'm 41 and i just wanted a big vr6 engine to do a lot of the hard work. the gti is more wieldy, but trust me, hit a bend way too fast in the r32, and the car will take you round on all 4 wheels. It is incredibly fast because it allows you to drive fast without any drama or control issues. On my customary drive home I am up to 20mph faster round the corners than my old gti.

Now on the gti forum I would expect you to say - dram is good! but as I say, at 41, I now really appreciate effortless speed.

enjoy both great cars!

RB32,

Wise words indeed. When it came to replace my Cupra R, i tested both the R32 and the GTI. In my opinion the GTI was an excellent car, but wasn't different enough to my Cupra R, plus it was 10 bhp down which doesn't make any difference in the real world. But when I drove the R32 I was hooked to the V6, it didn't feel like I was in a hot hatch but a very fast, stable cruiser, which at the wrong side of 40 is ideal for me. Although the GTI driver will get the last laugh at the petrol pumps.

RB32. AWD doesn't aid grip in the dry, and TBH, not by masses in the wet either. Where it excels is traction. You can't compare the 1.8T GTI to the 2.0FSI T GTI either as they are completely different animals. Hit a bend way too fast in an R32 and you'll end up in a ditch mate , i made that mistake at silverstone in an A3 Quattro. Haldex is good in snow and ice too, but remember you are still FWD 80% of the time, + you are carrying a lot more weight up front. As for a Mk4 GTI vs a Mk 5 R32, sure it would destroy it round the twsities, but then so would a Mk 5 GTI!

As for petol, TBH, hardly anything in it IMO. GTI is worse than i expected.
