Ok so coming froma Subaru Impreza WR1 with 320bhp, wasn't going to be easy as I loved the power and grip but at 230 miles on a tankfull and 90 yes 90 when racing (on private roads of course)... something had to give as I really needed more economy, so after having a good look around I decided on an 2005 Audi A3 2.0Tdi, Sportback, S-Line Quattro.

I took delivery in on 15th July...The car was very tight when I first drove it as in engine and suspension so it seemed a bit gutless and was bouncing all over the place and I thought I've made a mistake here! but over the next few weeks things started to get better the suspension was first to give and the handling improved and gave me more assurance that it was going to grip in the bends and after about 3000 miles the engine livened up and is now very good although I have recently added a Superchip which when I've had a bit of time to use it I will write a review on that also...

The wheels are lovey but being 18's you've got to be really carefull when parking but this was the same as my Impreza so I'm used to it and there are a few niggles I think are design faults they are:

1, The folding mirrors dont go in when you lock the car they are operated by a switch on the door and if you forget you have to put the key back i to operate them...

2, I have automatic lights and once set I would have liked a light on the dash to tell me when they are on...as they come on in low light but before you can tell they're on... if you see what I mean?

3, The arm rest is fine on a motorway but gets in the way of the hand brake at all other times and you cant fully apply the brake without lifting the arm...

Overall though I'm delighted with the car the fit and finish knock the Subaru into a cocked hat. I had to drive from somerset to middlesbrough recently and didn't have a back ache when I got there, it was when we had the really cold weather just after Xmas and then next morning it was minus 7.5 degrees, the car started fine and was faultless all the way home so you can't really ask for more.

I now get 450 miles on a tankfull and I would be interested in as to what other similar 2.0 Tdi owners with Quattro are getting?

Seaco,

Great review there, I think I can say I’ve found the same with my A3 Quattro S Line TDi. One thing I don't have a problem with though is the hand break. I was very lucky to get one of the first deliveries of the 06 model so it could be that they changed the design on the rest.

The thing that does bug me though is the rear wash. When I put it on, it squirts water for a second or 2 before the wiper actually moves, this just means I get the water sprayed down the back of the car.

On the subject of economy, I'm also getting about 450 per tank, I’ve been monitoring the MPG recently and tend to average about 40 – 45 depending upon driving style, the best I’ve had so far was on a run from the midlands to Leeds when I got 48.2

nice write-up Seaco 169144-ok.gif

Watch out for one other design niggle. If you don't have roof bars and the roof is waxed and wet so the water beads etc. Then when you open any window it comes straight in onto your armrest bit. smashfreakB.gif

I carry a micro-fibre cloth in the car especially for it.
