harminder
Hi guys, I am of need of a run around to get me to work and back - basically a cheap but fun motor....one that is likely to get thrashed around a bit Now I was just wondering what are the differences between the 8v GTi and the 16v one? I know the obvious one is performance but even so I have been told that the 8v engine packs more torque low down in the rev range where as the 16v engine comes back higher in the rev range? Any differences in standard equipment that comes with the cars? Is the suspension set-up any better on the 16v one? What about MPG differences? Or is it only the engine? Also what about reliability issues? I have seen a few high mileage 8v Gti's which suggests they are strong? Are the 16v engines any better? So any other differences? Cheers
mulkbear
I prefer the 8V but the 16v are faster, i like the 8v because they are a very simple engine and very easy to maintain plus the 16v engine starts to feel tied after the 100k, but i have never owned a 8v or 16v so my comments are purly a technicians point of few. mikeg1962
I had a mark 2 8 valve GTI and a Mark 3 8v GTI. To be honest, the Mark 3 was a good car but definitely lacked the "hot hatch" performance of the Mark 2. It was more a warm hatch! If you want something with serious go, get the 16V. If you just want a good, reliable car with decent performance and reasonable street cred, you will be perfectly happy with the 8v. I moved from a very quick Renault Laguna RTI (130mph top whack) to the slower Mk3 8v GTI and was greeted with comments like, "You have a GTI then? Didn't think you were a racer!" Fact was, the Laguna was quicker go figure! DR1VER
harminder
Well i've sat in a 8v GTI and thought it had good grunt but did lack that little X factor.. For the money I am going to spend I dont expect crazy power but just want a fun car for my ride to work (mainly being some nice quiet back roads).. I fancy a 16v one but I feel the 8v will just be more reliable
BenjaminTDI
I think the 8V engines have a lot less BHP than the later 16v ones too. I would go for the 16v if you can find one that's an ok price/condition.
Skidmark
Go for the 16v....quicker than 8v.....more eco than the VR6... if you sort the shocks & springs it's a good car... ran one for 146k and my son then took it to 180k & was [is] still going strong ! cheers
Mook
I've run every conceivable flavour of Golf GTI, from Mk1 to Mk4. I would get the 16V GTI in Mk3 flavour if I were you. The economy is almost identical to the 8V, but it actually goes half like a hot hatch, which the Mk3 8V GTI definitely wasn't. You might find it a bit soft compared to a Mk2 or Mk4 GTI, but other than that, they're fairly bulletproof. Make sure that whatever you buy has a full service history and as many receipts as possible. HTH
R32North
I'd get a MKII as the MKIII was heavy and not that good as a GTi. MKII, 8V, late model Big Bumper, unmollested (if one still exists)........ that would be my choice Anyone selling one?
Mook
No, but I'm looking for one for Scumball

Are the electrics any good? I take it the engine should be fine if serviced well!
BenjaminTDI
Taken from parkers: [ QUOTE ] GTI 8V: Engine Size: 1984 cc Cylinders: 4 0-60 mph: 9.8 s Power Output: 115 bhp Valves: 8 Torque: 166 Nm Torque: 122 lb/ft Top Speed: 123 mph [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] GTI 16v Engine Size: 1984 cc Cylinders: 4 0-60 mph: 8.0 s Power Output: 150 bhp Valves: 16 Torque: 180 Nm Torque: 133 lb/ft Top Speed: 134 mph [/ QUOTE ] Definately think I'd go for the 16v!
