MattR32
I was behind a new one in metallic grey last night and it looked very nice indeed. Reason I ask is becuase FIL is after another cars having had a string of Landcruiser Amazons (bought partly so he didn't lose his license after a string of pokey cars and multiple points). He's looking around at other stuff now but listens to my "advice" quite closely and is interested in one. The "brief" is comfy, well made, big fuel tank and very good range between fill ups, pretty rapid, preferably 4WD and not too flashy. Would this car fill this criteria and is the 4.2TDI available on the A6 or is it just the A8? Cheers!
jimdiesel
Yup had mine since Sept 04. Would fit the brief perfectly. Very comfortable, though the ride is more dynamic than plush. Pretty quick and between 31 and 40mpg, which gives a 600-700 mile range from the 80litre tank. See this months CAR magazine for their end of term report. What car and Top Gear have run them as well and they both thought the car was exceptional. The 4.2 is only in the A8.
MattR32
Cheers Jim! Sounds pretty ideal to me - I'll get that CAR and send it over to him. I've been trying to move him away from Landcruisers for ages - I may finally triumph! That range thing is VERY useful and could well be a clincher, even though it seems quite a minor thing! andywgg
I'm also considering one having changed my job. Currently have a 2.0Tdi A6 - assume the 3litre is a lot quicker? Also assume I'm better with the auto box - they seem to do a manual one now. Anyone else got one? Be interested in hearing from as many owners as poss - alternatives seem to be the 530D and the E320d - but love my A6 (and of course I've got the roof racks..) Pidge
Test drive the 3 litre - the difference is day and night. But don't get a manual one or you'll get done at resale. The bm and merc are tempting, but both are 2wd, merc is a merc (although i'd consider the new ml or s) and my dad's 3.0d (X5) is on it's 5 visit to the dealer and it's only 8 months old. It hesitates at T junctions and has started cutting out altogether when driving, hence i've no confidence in them atm. (My money is in the A6 3.0TDI and if only I needed to drive more it would be perfect)
andywgg
I think the A6 offers the best value - same monthly outlay as a 320 avantgarde (so slightly less bells and whistles) but a lot less than the beemer - plus to get the audi specced up with sat nav and xenons is cheaper than BMW - an of course it's a quattro, which i like the sound of, although haven't ever driven one. Will definitely go for auto, as I tend to spin the wheels and stall occasionally even in my 2.0Tdi.
gizze
Consider a 6 month old 535d M-Sport, take them both out and you will really see a difference. The 530d is great, but there is hesitation when first pulling away, you don't get this with teh 535d. Then get a DMS remap on the 535d when you get bored! Transforms the car. I was looking to replace my A6 avant with a new 3.0TDi quattro S-Line, but by the time you have specced it with everything that you would want on a car like that you are talking nearly £45k, and the performance just isn't there for that sort of money, imho. Great looking car though.
cruiser647
Seems like a common fault on the BMW 3.0 d with the auto box. My friends have the X5 with the same hsitation problems. Dealers and BMW don't seem to give a toss. (apparently same happens on the 2.7 d Jag S-Type with same autobox...........)
