willg60
Hi, long time no post, thought you might be interested to hear the latest with the S8 saga. Been putting up with the problem since I last posted (actually, that's since the first day I had the car!), finally put her back in for more diagnostics. It's been at the stealers for 2 whole weeks and they finally decide it is the gearbox that's knackered. GREAT! Priced up, this is gonna cost me a total of £4,200, including £2,250 for the part plus vat, 10 hours labour (at £88 ph, s/b £129 ph) to fit, plus the hours spent diagnosing and a quick lube service. I think needless to say she will be straight up for sale, so if anyones interested in a very clean Ronin spec S8 with a brand new box, here it is. Cheers! Teacake
How much do you trust that dealer? If they are anything like my local one, you would be well-advised to get a second opinion.
crasher
I also believe that Ric Wood does rebuilds as well. Far cheaper than stealers. linky is http://www.ricwood.com/home_page.htm
Botang
Its the standard reply from a dealer, they always want to put a new box in.
charlie61
It's not worh spending £4200 on an 8 year old car, you'd probably gbreak even if you sold it as is, what's it worth 7-8k in good running order, so if you got 3-4k for it as is you may as well do that. Teacake
[ QUOTE ] Its the standard reply from a dealer, they always want to put a new box in. [/ QUOTE ] That's true, but if willg60 went to a decent independent who knew what they were doing, he might get a chance of some-one actually diagnosing what's wrong. willg60
To be honest, the problem has got so bad that it was almost undriveable ... I just want to get it fixed and sold as quick as possible. Total nightmare, one can only learn from ones mistakes! Stealer said there was a lot of swarf in the sump .... how come they didn't see that when they did the ATF and filter change a couple of months back? Maybe cos they didn't actually do it .... Never again (unless I win the Euro lottery!)

Golfer
My S8 had a re-build on the box, some company in Ipswich, cost £2300, and no trouble after that, mileage: 104K sold at 149K, the guy's wife still driving it at 180K no probs. AudiMuppet
Guys, There is a bit of a popular misconception about what dealers are capable of. Think of it like this... To keep up with new product and updates from Audi your local main dealers are in the main (please note any techs out there, I said in the main... not all!!!) really fitters. They have neither the expertese (how do you spell that!) or the equipment to strip and fix gearboxes. Hence most dealers will simply put in a new fully assembled box. You be much better advised (as pointed out in the previous post) to go to a local specialist who can strip and repair an existing box for much less cash. It's what I would do with any car out of warranty or without the service and maintenance plan.

[/ QUOTE ] I disagree, Audi Techs are briefed and trained fully on how to dismantle Tiptronic and Multitronic boxes. The reason Audi Centres will usually not strip them is because by the time you've stripped the gearbox it would cost you more in labour than fitting a Exchange-Unit Gearbox anyway. I've worked at my Audi Centre for four years and we've had Customers go to specialists to get their Gearboxes worked on because we're 'Too Expensive'. Both their Gearboxes failed after less than 10000 miles so they ended up coming to us anyway. If somethings too good to be true, it usually is! [/ QUOTE ] The quality of Audi techs varies wildly. I know of some people here who have had excellent work performed on their gearboxes by Audi dealers, other dealers can't even follow simple written instructions to perform straightforward tasks. I disagree that the reason they won't strip boxes is cost; it's to avoid liability for later problems.
willg60
Some interesting chat .. anyway, I've now handed over the cash and it's on ebay (take a look!). I'm moving to a new job so haven't got the time to take it to a specialist. At least the new owner will have peace of mind knowing that they've got got a brand new box ... willg60
Well, its cheap, reliable, cheap tax etc etc, can't fault it really! Back to the trusty VW's for me! Actually, it's a really nice motor, I bought it on ebay and I think (hopefully this time) I did alright. It's like a new car inside and the body work is very straight and clean.
