Unlike anybody else here, I'm actually not keen on the appearance of the 18s....I don't like the two-tone effect....It looks merely fancy and false to me. Even the silver doesn't look silver.

I know I am probably in the absolute minority of GTI forum users but I personally find them 'too much in your face' for the cars size & overall design subtlety...

i can see both points of view as far as aesthetics are concerned. The 18's give the GTi a much more striking look and, for some, this is important and in keeping with their reasons for buying the car. Especially as the GTi styling, as opposed to the ST or VXR, is relatively restrained. The 17's,IMHO, also look great but are more low key and def less attention grabbing. this suits those who want to keep the subtle factor.

A very good point this mate, and I can see where you`re coming from. 169144-ok.gif

The standard 17`s do look good, and perhaps do suit those better who want to maintain the car`s slightly understated looks (when I say "slightly" BTW, I mean "perfect", as for me, something like the Astra VXR is not in the same league, looks-wise).

For me, however, the 18`s are just the job, as, IMHO, they really finish the car off, and have a beautiful finish to them which looks almost "milled", from up-close. Any Engineers on here care to confirm/destroy my comment on the "milled" look ? grin.gif

I like the grey in the two-toning, it really adds a bit of extra quality finish and looks great with dark coloured GTI's. In fact the 18's tend to look so much better with the GTI that dealers in Auckland order all GTI's with 18's unless you ask otherwise.

But as you say Red, it's good we have the choice -- the world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same stuff!

Hi Jono,

I like the grey bits especially on the Steel Grey car (like Jay's), but also on the blacks, but not the other colours. Interesting about Auckland supplying 18s as standard.

I think Jono may mean that dealers stock cars are ordered in with 18s because of their popularity but I suspect you still have to pay the options upgrade cost of $2000 for the 18" Detroits ? 169144-ok.gif

I seem to be worried stiff about kerbs and seem to park 6 feet away from them with the 18s on but don't seem to worrie about the car with 17s on. I have touched the kerb a few times with 17s on and not marked them were the 18s would have hit. If the face of the 18s were not as flat and had an edge on them like older alloys i would not be as worried.

Also as the roads round here are all potholes and patches i feel better with more rubber on the sidewall to help take the impacts of the bad road.

The 18s may look better but with the 2 cars side by side i don't think theres that huge a difference.

imo the 18s are all about looks something the GTI unlike its rivals was never about.

Yep, that's right. You most certainly still pay for them. smile.gif

Hi Punas, dead right! The rear alloys in particular and the GTI's bum get dirty very quickly and very easily if you are out enjoying yourself driving at this time of year. I have to admit that I felt rather good when a friend told me that the back of mine looked like a rally car!

Yes the backside does get dirty, same as all hatches from my experience. The 18s don't tend to show the dirt much at all in my experience.
