sTTu
Hi Does anyone have any idea of the cost of extending the manufacturers 3yr warranty into yr 4 (maybe yr 5 too) ? Mine runs our June. I guess as its a 3.0l it will be more than a 1.8 ? Thanks sTTu

BenjaminTDI
it depends on the mileage, could be anything upwards of £500 per year.

gizze
I would check out warranty direct, this was posted by Ksoar on the bmwland forum, you want to aim for around a 1/3 of the Audi price... [ QUOTE ] negotiate with them and play hard to get. They do keep phoning, again and again. I even got calls after I bought a warranty. However, three really really important things to watch out for with WD: 1. The best warranty available to cars over 2 years old is the GOLD (not Platinum). This specifically lists what items are covered. This differes from their Platinum cover for newer cars (IIRC less than 2 years old) which covers everything except a few exclusions, such as exhaust, battery and usual consumables (similar to BMW). This difference is significant. If something not on the list goes wrong, it is not covered. E.g the PDC sensors are not on the GOLD cover list, but I had two replaced by BMW previously. On the Platinum cover, they would have been covered but of course, no-one with a car over 2 years old can buy the platinum cover - and this means no BMW, as standard BMW warranty is 3 years. Anyway, I explained the huge difference between them and they eventually offered me a "STAR" warranty - this is effectively the trade version of the Platinum warranty - so even if you car is over 2 years old, it covers everything save a specificed list of exclusions. TBH, i feel far more comfortable with this approach. The problem with the warranties that list what is covered is that I, off the top of my head, can't imagine everything that could go wrong. If everything is covered, better peace of mind. Also, and the best bit, they offered this warranty for no additional price over and above the Gold warranty during negotiations. 2. Get written confirmation they will pay BMW labour rates and only fit genuine parts (i saw a post here previously where WD insisted on a reconditioned part). I got confirmation in email form that they were happy to pay £100 plus VAT per hour and would use genuine new BMW parts only. 3. Even if you specify Wear and Tear, any wear and tear claim in the first 90 days is excluded (look at the small print) - remarkable that 25% of the policy year is not covered. This is so that people don't buy a warranty to fix a pre-existing problem. I explained that as I was transferring from a BMW warranty, I would not have a gao in cover and any problems would be fixed by BMW. Tus, there was no incentive for me to make a fraudulent claim onWD trying to fix a pre-existing condition. They agreed to waive the 90 day exclusion. And finally, they agreed I could pay interest free over 6 months. [/ QUOTE ]
Phantom
My warranty ran out last May, as many of you know VW / Audi UK were having major problems getting their updated extended warranty approved by the FSA which meant that for most of last year they were NOT able to offer a manufacturers extended warranty on VW Group cars in the UK. They sent me a letter back in May saying that a third party company called Mondial would be in touch offering me an alternative warranty and to date I have not heard from them or Audi as to what has happened with this. To be honest at the moment I am not bothered, I have probably saved myself £600 or so as I have had nothing go wrong, touch wood and I have coved 16k miles since I received that original letter from Audi. Now that my car has 75k on it what would most people think was a suitable 'cut off' point from a mileage perspective as to whether you should bother extending the warranty. [/ QUOTE ] This is the million dollar question I guess. I do 4000 miles per year, my Cab is three years old this summer and so far has 12,000 miles on the clock. Realistically it may hit 14K by the end of the summer (if I get time to drive it!!!) so if the warranty was £1000 per year, over the next two years how much will £2000 buy me in terms of repairs ? I don't fancy the cost of a new multitronic gearbox much or replacing a big bit of engine BUT on my mileage would you say the odds are in my favour, I sure as hell aint going to wear it out ! I've never run a car with no warranty before Should I chance it ? Thanks sTTu
BenjaminTDI
sTTu I really wouldn't bother with any form of warranty with a car that age and mileage, save your money.
