AZURES3
Guys For about the last 2 - 3 months when driving I get a really bad tramlining effect on mildly un-even surfaces, especially during braking. You really have to hold the wheel tight and steer against it in many cases, the wife is not keen on driving it anymore as it needs such force to keep straight on occasion. Not sure if it is related but when on low speed manoeuvres on near full or full locks the wheels seem to slip sideways and you get a juddering effect through the wheel. The dealer had a quick look when in for its service in December but did not have time for a good look, they said everything was tight and safe BUT it was not like this for the previous 14 months. Could it be:- 1) All 4 tyres are just under 3mm so could it be causing the tramlining. 2) Could the tracking be out 3) Could the steering rack be on the way out, not sure if this is common but it was on my A4Cab. Any advice/ideas appreciated. AZ

UBM
Thats exactly how my cab used to feel - almost ended up the ditch a few times. The avant is a much bigger improvement!

BenjaminTDI
I would suggest getting the tracking checked out, but I suspect it's just due to the wide tyres and you're noticing it more now they are lower on tread?
Sparky
This is EXACTLY the problem I've had in the last month. Ever since I had new rear tyres (235/45/R17's) fitted, and being told my fronts are at 3mm, it's handled like you stated. I hope when I replace the fronts, it goes back to normal. lottiefox
My fronts are now on about 3mm and the rears have only used about 1.5mm so have much more tread, since the tyres have worn at the front I've noticed more tramlining although I think the 18s always have a tendency to do that. I did get my balancing and alignment checked yesterday - balancing was out at the rear, alignment was fine - slight tiny tiny .0000something out on one front but I told them to leave it alone rather than mess it up! If it needs adjusting I'll go to APS but a free laser check seemed like a wheeze. I'd say it is your tyres making a difference but well worth checking the alignment, but don't let Kwikfit or anyone do it - find somewhere with proper 4 wheel laser thingy who know about Quattro. Soapsuds
try driving a starion with different width wheels / tyres on the back to the fronts..... you will then know what tramlining is!! Fecking nightmare on the m'way on the inside lane in the lovely truck grooves... drives like i've had a few too many
Lynas
Did that tracking get checked? Mine feels like it's going somewhere other that where I'm telling it to.. waving on road... that wouldn't be cause be steering rack surely? Any updates / thoughts.. Unfortunately our roads are so pitted by trucks etc big tyres find the grooves. The QS has wider wheels at the back, but the same size tyres. Durrsaku
Hi, i find that too and yes it is pretty bad as you describe it. I find that i have to be on alert all the time cos the steering will do sudden sharp turns as if i'm loosing control. It happens more on alongside roads repairs which are long and more elevated than the original road. I think is something that has more to do with the tyre width than anything else. Tyre brand also influences that. I think Contis are probably the worst. Almost damaged my new alloys hitting the pavement once.
Sparky
Is it anything to do with the weather though? Why has mine only started doing this lately? Or is the the 3mm front tread telling me it's time to replace? Just seems odd I have noticed this suddenly.

Lynas
Yeah... Maybe it is tyre width / weather. Really windy up here. Car doesn't feel dangerous, it's just I feel like I'm sitting on the edge of my seat sometimes. I'll get all 4 wheels tracked and report back to you what was found! tam tamster
Hi Did you resolve the tyre slip thing? I have it too. Car is going in for alignment next week but wondered if your experience means I should also get them to look at anything else? Thanks - Matt
