possible problem worn gearbox mounting???....

Hi all...had to call audi roadside yesterday as my beloved car was starting to make some strange noises...unfortunatley as an rac guy turned up and not the usual audi chap,he seemd pretty on the ball though..anyways problem "seems to be this....

seems to happen more in 2nd to third gear as i excellerate off and not at any great speed...the underneath of the car (below driver more though) makes like a rumblings/vibrating noise...its stops after excellerating and only seems to happen below 40ish and in the lower gears....started to happen on the last day or so...also have noticed the very odd occassional clunk noise as as i go over a speed bump or change down gear a little to early (done this on purpose a couple of times as i thought this is when i heard it first)must stress this other noise only happen very rarely but both things seem to have started around the same time....not a coincidence i think...

so the rac bloke took it out for a spin to reproduce what i had heard and it did the same things...hes looked underneath but as its mostly covered unerneath is hard to be precise as to the problem but hes pretty sure its nothing to do with the exhausts...and thinks it probably a worn gearbox mount which is causing the problem of vibrations/clunk sound (tech description!)he spoke to another cooleague who said it may be the fly wheel or summit...which by all accounts isnt good?? confused.gif but overall thinks its the mount thats worn and needs replacing.

Car is under warranty still with audi ,am i covered if its this or will i have to pay? how serious is it and should i be worried alot...rac said it was ok to drive locally to audi dealer but advised against going anywhere far as it might make it worse....

car is being collected on monday and sorting a car for me but cant guarantee an audi a4 which is what i expect, told them i have aspecific child seat that fits audi a4 mostly, which is true to some extent....this car will only be for 48 hrs max and then its upto lancaster audi (liverpool) to sort me another, now i know how rubbish this dealer is and its likley the car wont be looked at for a while (days/weeks...?) and they wont have a car available for me... where do istand with all this...have had quite a few problems in the past when i first bought the car from audi (dane audi chester) but for the last 8 months no probs...any advice info as to the problem s above much appreciated! beerchug.gif

My 2.0SE seems to make a funny noise when setting off in 1st, then again in 2nd until you get up to speed. It sounds like it is the engine that is making a sort of gruff noise but I do know that the previous owner had been advised about a "broken rear gearbox mounting" when it went in for a service, and there don't seem to be any invoices for the fitting of such a part subsequently.

Maybe it's the same thing? There is a definite clunk if you accidentally stall the car, quite a prominent thud in fact.

Mine will be going in for a service shortly, so will get them to check it out.

Mine doesnt sound like its the engine but something else along with it,car performs fine and there are no warning lights..sounds more like a clattering dull vibrating noise almost as if the exhaust was vibratings having comes loose only which it hasnt! and is very unlikely to be to do with...suppose i will find out at someone point when audi get round to looking at it! or unless someone on here knows the exact cause!......thanks athough.

I get a similar noise from what feels like the back end of the prop shaft or rear diff.

It only happens when at low revs and when I accellerate from say 1500rpm, its like a rumble or vibration that goes away if I take my foot off the accellerator pedal a little.

Its a lot worse when I plug in a tuning box, the clutch starts to slip (or ESP kicking in)at the same time as the vibration starts.

I have posted a couple of threads about this but no-one seems to know what it is, but yes I agree it feels like a mounting has broken or something.

well its going to the dealer tomorrow but god knows when they will look at it,my worry is if its covered under my warranty and if not what cost could i be hit with....am planning on trading it in towards the end of the year for a newish one so need to keep it in good shape! ...

This is an interesting post, for me anyway!!!!

I have had a similar noise to this on my 2.0 A4 for a while, Its just been to the dealers and they have found the camchain tensioner faulty and replaced it, the car is now quieter, but there is still a noise there. This makes me think i had 2 noises!!.

The noise is very much as described above, rumbling, low revs, especially at low speed, doesnt seem as bad when you cane it.

Just one thing, if i hold my hand on the gearstick i can 'feel' vibration to the same tune as the noise, (if you know what i mean) Also, if you rest your hand on the gearstick, when you accelerate, then lift off, the gearstick moves. it kind of rocks back and forth when you accelerate then lift. Does anyone else's do this? Is it even supposed to? I have always been a Ford man upto now and none of them ever did this, what do you think? gearbox mounting sound favourite?

Basically i have given up with the dealer now, besides my used warranty runs out in April anyway, its due its MOT soon and i know a really good old School mechanic so i will ask him to check it out.

What do you guys think? Should the gearstick 'rock' like it does??
