DukeDesmo was telling me yesterday about a mod you can do to the 3.2 exhaust to improve the sound of the V6.

I understand about the valve opening at certain speeds revs etc. What I want to know is how people went about doing the mod.

I know some people have fitted a fancy switch etc, I won't be able to do this, i'm more interested in just a simple clip or tape method.

would appreciate any advice or pics etc.

Thanks people ECLIPSe.gif

The valve is a 'butterfly' valve in the left side tailpipe - you can see it down the pipe, if you grab the linkage on the side of the pipe you can turn it by hand (make sure pipe is cold!)

Simple way without messing with switches etc (and even if you do fit a switch, how do you know it works - as the valve only shuts when the car is moving!) is to physically block the valve in the open position.

To do this, first you need to disconnect the linkage so that the solenoid does not operate the valve - the linkage is a thin piece of metal (like thick wire) which is attached to a solenoid, above the pipe, and threads through a lever on the shaft that the valve is on, you can carefully pull out this wire from the lever and bend it away from the lever so that it does not touch it but the wire can still go up and down with the solenoid (I understand that if you disconnect the solenoid it shows an error on the diagnostics?) - maybe you can change the programme with Vagcom or similar?

Once disconnected the valve is loose, so you need to fix it in the open position (or cut it off completely), I did consider a spot weld on the linkage to hold it but decided to do something non-permanent so I clamped it in place (open) to do this I got a Jubilee clip that fits round the part that the lever is on and made a 'Z' shaped bracket from a piece of Stainless Steel welding wire that fits through the lever (in the same way as the original linkage) but then sits under the jubilee clip, fitted it all loose then turned it so that the valve was open and locked it up at that - I can refit all back to standard in a couple of minutes if I want to.

I read that someone had tested an R32 and that it made more power this way but I can't say I've noticed any more power (it would only be a small increase, if any) but it certainly sounds nicer and is still not loud in any way but a free-er flowing exhaust should be a good thing so I'm happy with the difference.

I did try to take some pics but it's difficult to do in a dark garage and they didn't turn out too good, but it really is a very easy mod to do.
