Phantom
Just had mine replaced , for mine at least the recommeded replacement was at 80k and I got it replaced at 75k, I just wanted to be safe as I think this can be an expensive job. You will be looking at £500 or so for a cambelt change but that won't include any other internal engine damage costs as a result of the snapped cambelt
leebo
would it be covered by audi as the car didnt even get to the recomended replacement time as i say the car has only ever been serviced at lancaster audi manchester
Phantom
I guess 2k miles is a very close call, I am not sure if the cambelt will be replaced under warranty ?. Due to the cost of replacement they could say it was due to normal wear and tear, but I would have thought there would be at least a 5%-10% safety margin allowing you to go slightly over the limit imposed by Audi. Tough one to call really
Soapsuds
what was the mileage when it snapped then?? Even though the service may be due in just 2k miles, the cam-belt me be overdue.... they need to be changed at 60k on the TDi 4 pots...... If it's over this, Audi wont do much at all. It ususally takes most, if not all, of the valves out and screws up the head. You might be looking at new head, new internals for it and all new belts / runners plus labour WORSE case scenario. Best case, few new internals + belts etc......
leebo
the mileage is just over 60k
leebo
also where would the best place be to get the parts required, or would it have to be dealer only cheers lee
FreightDog
my other car (non audi) is i think 60000 miles "OR" 5 years old you have to change the cambelt. I know yours is not yet 5 years, but once over the 60k will be a tough one with Audi. Like insurance companys, they will try anything to get out of paying. Saying that I used to have a Golf GTI Turbo and that went wrong just a month after the 3 years was up and The romford dealers done it free of charge. Soapsuds
if it is over 60k, you wont have a leg to stand on unfortunately. FSH or no SH. I have the same engine as yours and will be getting the belt done about 55k - 57k at the max. You will need to get it into a garage to see what the damage is before looking at parts etc. Recommend a good local garage for that - cheaper labour. There was someone on here who popped a cambelt BEFORE the recommended change and it cost in the region of £3k to mend, on a pertol engine. Audi gave him a miniscule amount (like a couple of hundred quid) as a good will gesture. That was FASH. Good luck - i think you might need it! BenjaminTDI
That's really bad news, I'm sorry to hear the worst happened You'll probably have bent all of your valves and the pistons will probably be damaged too. I'd say your audi centre will probably try to tell you it needs a whole new engine.. When did they tell you it needed doing then? 65k? Not the 60k that it's supposed to be changed at? peteA3TDI
is the car on the crappy avs or the fixed servicing?
Lynas
[ QUOTE ] the mileage is just over 60k [/ QUOTE ] If it's a 130 1.9 TDI then you've gone OVER the recommended interval for a timing belt and are on to nothing. It should've been changed around about 58K. unlucky.
shark_90
My A4 TDi had one at 64,000 on AVS by the dealers when it was a lease car. I changed it the second time at 123,000. Unfortunately if you've gone over the recommended limit, you don't have a leg to stand on. Service interval or not, it's in the book. Best of luck getting it fixed

Soapsuds
blimey!! did you not think about getting it checked first to see the extent of the damage??? What did the engine set you back?
leebo
yeah i got it checked there didnt seem to be too much apparent damage but i just think that once the belt goes the car is just never the same also i could of spent maybe 300-400 on repairing the old engine then still havin more probs and just keep pouring more money in i got an excellent engine from 4ringspares exact replacement with 30k on it for 750 plus 45 delivery it was an awkward job fitting it but once in it fired straight up and is now once again sweet as a nut

shark_90
That's crazy. You've lost faith in your car and the brand because you didn't look after it properly and the cam belt snapped?
danksy
bloody hell mate, sorry to hear about your cambelt, but it is 60,000 miles, not the nearest service to it Might be cheaper to get an engine from a scrapper depending on the damage, than paying VAG rates. leebo
shark i have no probs servicing my car but whats the point in doing it before its time im no mechanic, i can only service my car when the computor and the service book says so, it had another 2000 odd miles or until august this year before service it was just down to bad luck not lack of servicing its very easy to loose faith in a car that lets u down if i wanted an unreliable car i could nock about in a 400 quid escort or something similar not a well built expensive car
shark_90
I'm not being funny mate, but the interval for a cam belt is every 60,000 miles and not a mile over. I think it's 5 years if that age is reached earlier than 60,000 miles. If the belt snapped within the 60,000 miles of it being changed, and it was a genuine Audi part, then it (and any damage caused by it) is covered by Audi warranty, regardless of the age of the car. If your car was over 60,000 miles when the belt snapped, then I'm afraid it is down to you, not bad luck. Still, I feel for you! But I wouldn't be blaming or selling the car, especially for a 328. The fuel bill will surely kill you if you are used to a TDi.
leebo
yeah point taken. anyway ive repaired the car with a new engine and ive all ready bought a 328, 1 or the other is gonna be for sale i do like the audi but i have just lost faith in that particular car maybe ill sell them both an get a a4 avant s line as they look very nice
