topgazza
When I sold my 2000 (prefacelift) Passat Estate TDi Sport I praised its almost silent motoring prowess at any speed especially on motorways. Took my new Highline Estate on its first long journey today and noticed, as I had the radio turned down, a loud whistling wind noise coming from, well, somewhere. The only thing I could relate it to was my wifes Yaris which has a recall for wind noise through the swivel joints of its wing mirrors. This is noticable at quite low speeds but on my Passat, which has different shaped wing mirrors than my old one, the noise becomes noticable at around 60 mph and continues as speed increases. I have the ususal longways roof rails but they are the same as my old one. I suppose I could tape over the joints on the wing mirrors (or yes, turn the radio up ) and test again. Has anyone any clues or have heard of this problem?
pugboy
Windnoise on our car was caused by the door not shutting tight enough - I adjusted the strike plate and it went away. Could be that or your door seal. I'd be surprised if it was the wing mirrors as its a German car designed for high(ish) cruising speeds. We'll presume your wing mirrors are 100% located in the correct position and not slightly folded in etc.
drpellypo
It's probably the wing mirror. Common fault on the new B6's. If you go to vwvortex.com and check out the B6 forum, there's loads of posts about it.
SteNova
i've got a noisy passenger door due to not being far enough in... it was bad enough to cause the alarm to sound when the door was ment to be shut... dealer sorted it
topgazza
I'm gonna try the same trick I used on the wifes Yaris. Tape over the wing mirror joints to see if that eliminates the noise...or if its still there that the mirrors are causing it. Mine is a B5, I think, being a Jan 06 Highline(old shape) but I take drpellypo point about the wing mirrors on the B6. Door seals are an interesting possibility as although the road and general wind noise is overwhelming with the window open I can't hear any "whistling! when I open the drivers window at speed. MAybe that changes the dynamics enough to affect the noise. I'll experiment....but will probably end up at the dealer
philipdayton
Pugboy, when you say you adjusted the strike plate what exactly do you mean? I get whistling throught the seal around my drivers door (mainly when its windy and driving at speed) if i press the seal whilst driving it gets worse! Can the strike plate be moved in-board towards the car to get more compression on the seal?
topgazza
Just went for drive with tape over the wing mirror joints and the noise was still there. Rang the dealer and he suggested dropping the car in and they will send me out with a senior techie. Good thing is the noise is always there, kicks in spot on 60 and gets louder the faster I go. They will also give me a courtesy car if they decide to keep it in for adjustmenst. I might try another test with the door joints covered in tape...after I'm in the car of course DOH! .......just for my own interest.
SteNova
yes you can adjust the lock striker.. it's bolted onto a large floating but locked washer
topgazza
Just went for a fast drive with the wife in the back seat, no not for that!, and she reckons the whistling is coming from the offside rear of the car. Difficult to tell but it sounds like its coming from the vent grill that runs along the inside trim of the estate side windows. In reality that probably means from the rear door o/s. The seal looks ok on the 5th door but the seal did come off at the top so my new aerial could be fitted a week ago. Can't see any problem with it though. It looks snug and undamaged
topgazza
I've taped the 5th door up and still the noise. Noticed something which I've not seen before. Every car I've seen has a seal around all of the windscreen. Mine doesn't have one at the top. It looks odd. Could this be the cause ? Can anyone confirm if this is normal or ..not? aditz
topgazza , your Passat Estate has those rails on the roof? If it does, that could be the answer to your wind noise question. Check it out, common problem with Estates... Best of luck!
topgazza
I'm gonna tape the bases of those up as well aditz. There are gaps at the bottom of the mounting points and its possible the wind is getting underneath them. That should eliminate that. Although I had them on my old Passat Estate and they wern't a problem. I seem to remember them fitting snug on the roof at the mounting points though. Still puzzled by the l;ack of a sealing strip on the top of the windscreen. Think I'll check a dealer forecourt tomorrow and see if its the same on other Highlines
topgazza
I'm now convinced its the roof rails. This is odd because my old B5 Passat Estate had the same rails and there was no significant whistling noise. The one I have do have slight gaps whereas my old car were flush but I have taped it up and its still there. Very irritating. WOnder what the car would look like with no roof rails?
