nicktripper
Supercharger lol I think 300bhp in a 2 wheel drive car would be slightly on the mad side?
nicktripper
Oh, one point, be honest, doesnt the back of the R32 look like a standard Golf bar the exhaust? I was alittle dissapointed but I guess it is a subtle look? Am I wrong?
cerbera
[ QUOTE ] JHT Yeah im from down south, Reading way and id be only to happy to meet up, god plan. We will agree to disagree then, my knickers are not so much in a twist but slightly ruffled, some people have no idea what they are talking about. Sounds like you have plans for your R32. AMD, not Superchips then? On the rolling road my RS was pumping out 258bhp. Not bad, doing the decat etc meant that Bluefin was altered to account for not having the Cat etc, so it pupmed out more power. Nice. Also, even without the Cat it passed the Cat test for an MOT. Where abouts are you then? What does the AMD take the R32 up to then? Must go up by 10hp or something, that will still put you slightly down on my RS I believe [/ QUOTE ] Roving, Live not far away in Richmond, Surrey - so will definitely give you a shout once my new toy arrives! 258BHP ?! Jeez......it'll nearly be as quick as a focus TDCi...... Seriously - must be a fairly rapid motor now! The AMD conversion as L3ett says, puts out just over 270BHP and 270Lb/ft of torque. I have heard only excellent things about AMD and as they are VAG specialists I'm more inclined to go down that route.... 300BHP in a 2 wheel drive car ?!? Try 4 wheel drive....! (the R32 has the Haldex 4motion system). I go back home to Scotland a fair bit in winter and hence I'm looking forward to the extra security of 4wd in the snow/ice... I agree that the R32 doesn't exactly scream out at you, but this is partly what appeals to me. Still looks pretty mean in the flesh though methinks! Each to their own! nicktripper
Oh sorry, didnt post the torque, aparently on the other guys he got a torque reading of 282, pretty cool so mine should be bang on that as well. 4 Motion, yeah yeah ok thats a form of 4 wheel drive I guess. Since getting bluefin I also get 15-20 more miles out the tank, Bonus. Ok, look forward to you getting your car mate and we will meet up.

[ QUOTE ] Quite interesting: http://www.fast-zi-nation.de/articles/RS_vs_R32_02.html [/ QUOTE ] Which is pretty much what I said all along - the cars are VERY close. I'd still like to have seen what they would have said if they tried both cars in everyday driving conditions.
nicktripper
Good article that I have to agree with the exhaust they put on the RS though. Aparently they had a different exhaust system planned out for the RS but it failed the durability test so at the last minute they put on an almost bog standard cheap exhaust. Bang out of order. So yeah, it was a bit quiet but it still rumbled. My Mongoose on the other hand sounds sweet like it should do. Both even cars, but I reckon with a few adjustments the R32 has a huge capability to expand with its 4 wheel driving AWD capability. I would still argue the interior though, the R32 is bland, black leather ? RS, black leather, suede trimmings, bit of blue, polished chrome and some Carbon to boot. [/ QUOTE ] My R32 is coming with Grey Leather/Alcantara....which I've seen in the flesh and looks great with the Deep Blue paintwork...! nicktripper
Grey and Blue, sounds nice, dont forget the holes round the arches and the paint defects, they are a great addition to the look, speed holes and the bumps adding to the downforce Blue is nice in the RS, stops us from getting bored looking at grey. Typical R32 driver, driving with there eyes haveing a and dream about keeping up with an RS
Domster
Dreaming of keeping up? The only thing you can beat us on is 100-0 in braking and 80-120km/h.....Yes we need to dream tosser.
spd
hi everyone, I have to disagree with anyone who goes on about the RS focus torque steering, as it is a myth which gets banded around too much. i'm not biased as i drive a tt, but my mate bought one couple of months ago and i've had a few runs in it and it truly is a work of art. I have never felt anything so planted and i've driven alot of different cars. It feels so nimble. I was a bit apprehensive about flooring it down some b roads in my area after what i'd heard about it being hard to drive and the torque problem but my mate just said do it. so i really banged the throttle and the car just rocketted, its truly out of the this world, it just glued itself more the faster i pushed it. the wheel does move around a bit as with any car going fast over bumpy roads, but it only gives you more confidence. there certainly wasnt any torquesteer. it looks really beautiful. they could have done so much more with the interior though, and they really cheaped out with the door handles, but you forget everything when your behind the wheel. i keep begging him to give me another go. the kick from the turbo is more brutal than my tt. i had a much briefer drive sister in laws R32, i couldnt push it too hard otherwise she would get off. but the handling is much like the my car, you dont get much feel, too many electronics taking the drive awy from you, but the suspension feels softer and i thought it had more body roll. but its so nice in side, and i love the sound. as for looks i dont think you can compare the RS and R32. the RS looks like a hardcore race car, the R32 looks like a golf with big wheels and (it has to be said) a damn good front bumper, but not in the league of the RS in the looks department IMO. If i didnt love my sofisticated grown up car then i would get the RS. its something really special, and you have to drive it for yourself b4 you believe what other people say. L3ETT
I thought the problem was the quaife diff not torque-steer..? Have a read of this months EVO for a review of the R32 vs the new RX8, not specifically for that bit, but they have some scathing comments about the RS. Nuff said. As for R32 handling like a TT - you have got to be joking!! My last car was a TT and I can tell you the R32 is soooo much better in the handling department. TT understeered far too quickly, whereas you can push the R32 much more before it understeers. The grip in the R32 is amazing - nothing like a TT! Also if the suspension isn't hard enough, then I must have summat wrong with me 'cos me fillings rattle over rough B roads!! As for the golf with big wheels comment, well I prefer understated looks - and being a TT owner yourself I'm surprised you prefer the styling of the RS! Surely the RS is just big wheels and a new front bumper too? You'll be telling me next that you find Scoobys pretty But to sum up my thoughts before this thread runs and runs, I never said the RS was a bad car! My opinion is though that due to the bits of the RS I didnt like (quaife/torque steer-whatever, interior, exhaust noise..) I chose the R32 as the better day to day alternative. The driver will make more difference than the performance of the cars head to head IMHO. Both are very quick cars but I'm glad I chose the R32. spd
EVO changed their minds on the RS. one minute it was fantastic 4 and a half stars, and the next minute they just slate it at any chance they get 3 stars. I think the scooby is one ugly . I still think the TT locks onto the road much better than the R32, but thats just my opinion. i stick with the TT coz i think there is no car on earth with a better interior. am i wrong? bose is also so nice in a small environment. after driving the RS i find the TT's steering is a bit dull as with all golfs. MIKVW
[ QUOTE ] I still think the TT locks onto the road much better than the R32, but thats just my opinion. [/ QUOTE ] It's interesting how opinions differ, I found the R32's handling superior to the TTs in every respect. For context, I owned 4 different TTs back to back July 99 to April this year - including pre-ESP, post-ESP and most recently a 2002 model with the 3rd evolution suspension (which for 6 weeks I ran side by side with the R32). nicktripper
Aparently Evo had a big row with someone at Ford and from now on they Slate the RS. They loved it, couldnt praise it enough, then suddently they hate it, very strange. Shame though as I did respect there opinion before they did that. Have to say I drove the TT 225 and it was supurb, it was rounda track, it went very well. If the RS hadnt come out I would have got the TT. R32, looks to boring and sedate. But a decent car as we said before. The diff on the RS is supurb, goes to show once again, jelous R32 drivers dont know what they are talking about. Now the Torquesteer miff has been disproven they are moving on to the diff. Weird. But each to there own.

Gti_Fly
Roving What is the point of you harking on about the RS? We've heard your views on your car, and you've heard the R32 owners here. Can't everyone just stop bickering and agree that we all disagree. I don't for one moment believe that the R32 is the king of hot hatches. I bought my R32 because of the ownership prospect. Day to day use, decent performance, decent handling (not the king of the pile), decent enough looks, wicked engine/exhaust note, And decent interior too. I did have a look at RS fous too, but decided that if I was gonna spend £20k on a car, I'd atleast do it for the above reasons. The ford for me just had a really nasty cabin, and that to me meant more than what car books wrote in their write ups. I have no doubt that the RS is a better/more fun car to drive. But the golf is a better ALL ROUND package for me, and even more so when it's £20K+ (i paid £27k for mine) I mean the list can go on and on, why compare the focus to the R32 only? you could include cars like the Evo's and imprezas, and I'm sure those cars come even closer to ultimate driving pleasure for sub £30k. The list is endless At the end of the day it's all down to what the owner wants from a car. Each to their own. So good luck with your focus mate, I'm sure you're gonna be having a barrel of laughs in it for miles to come.
