s3ollie
hi does my vagcom cable have to be plugged in to the car for it to be reconized by vagcom? i have made sure the ports are right in device manager but when i run the initial test it says port status: ok. interface: not found. does this mean it cant find the car or the lead. I think the interface is the lead right??? any advice
shark_90
It needs to be plugged into the car with the ignition on, try that
s3ollie
oh ok thanks i was just trying it on my desktop pc to see if it worked ok. but have to borrow my brother laptop to plug in to the car. So when it says interface not found it is refering to the car?
shark_90
The interface isn't active until it's plugged into the car, so although it's not directly referring to the car it does need to be plugged in until it'll work.

peterb
It depends on the cable ... my USB HEX+CAN cable is recognised , and responds to the comms test, without being connected to the car.
shark_90
Perhaps because USB is capable of powering something at 5V while serial isn't?
peterb
[ QUOTE ] Perhaps because USB is capable of powering something at 5V while serial isn't? [/ QUOTE ] Yep, and as far as I can see, S3ollie has bought a USB lead.
UweRoss
Depends what kind of interface. If it's one of ours and runs as native USB device, then VAG-COM should recognize it even if it's not plugged into a car (and will tell you that it's not plugged into a car). If it's some third party job where the drivers emulate a COM port, all bets are off. -Uwe-
s3ollie
it is a usb lead from ebay with drivers that emulate the com port as mentioned. now i have plugged it in to the car it is working fine
