Which A4?

Hi,

I'm looking to sell my Elise 135R after the summer for a "family car". Heart breaking as it is, I can't have everything.

Looking to spend £18Kish.

Looking at A4 1.8T S lines but I'm a bit concerned it will be underpowered (can't afford a RS4). Reason being, I had the same engine in my SEAT Ibiza 20VT and although it was fine for this car the A4 is a lot heavier.

There is the choice of remapping it to 220/230bhp.

Anyone done this?

Other choice is a 1.9 or 2.0 TDi. I would be remapping one of these too.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Gareth

Slightly off the wall (and like an estate agent, I'm suggesting spending a bit more) but the early B6 S4 saloons (344PS 4.2 V8) on 03 plates are now trading at £20k. What about getting one of these at auction and extending the warranty, or hopefully getting one with a couple of months warranty left (I think the first deliveries were May 03) and taking it into a dealer for a check up?

I've got a 1.9TDi Sport and love it to bits.

You haven't got the 190bhp of a lotus, but you won't be far off with a re-map.

You'll also be changing gear alot in a TDi, but who cares! 700 miles from a tank!! Nice.

Mine's up for a rempa next few months, so I'll let you know what happens.

I have a 1.8T Sport (pre-s-line) 190 version. Certain tuners like Star can get you iro 230 - 240 bhp from them, ours isnt a slow car - its not in the same league as a true sports car, but its fast enough for some fun from time to time. IF you can get to the MK meet I can take you out for a spin so you can have a feel of what its like.

I would recommend you look around tho - ours is fairly spartan spec, but for your money you should find yourself one with some nice toys as well.

the TDi variants can be good fun as well and economy is good, but our 1.8T on its weekly commute returns over 500 miles on a tank.

Whatever you do, and I really can't stress this enough, do NOT buy the FWD 1.9 TDi. By all means buy it in Quattro form - but not 2WD.

Test drive it first. I had two 130BHP 1.9TDI saloons and now have a 2.0TDI avant, all FWD, and I rarely had a problem.

Because it's utter garbage in my opinion.

I have an A4 Avant TDi (130) Sport - and it is the most flawed and compromised car that could have been so good, but instead is just so bad.

The ESP on the car is appalling. The handling is abysmal for something tagged with the 'Sport' badge and the car goes nothing like as well as it looks - far from it.

The engine is noisey by comparison to it's peers (very), it's underpowered in comparison to a 320d, it's cramped in the driver/passenger space department and the car is very much the epitomy of form over function (look very nice, but interior space isn't what it might seem).

I've documented my thoughts on it ample times, but suffice to say the car is not even near the total package that a 320d is and so much of that could have been resolved if it wasn't for the appalling FWD imbalance, control and general electronics that Audi appear to have got so badly wrong that it wrecks the car.

Milo thought similarly of his TDi, although perhaps not as strongly.

They are very frugal though, incredibly so. For mile crunching if you can live with the drawbacks then they're not a bad car - but I made the wrong choice and won't make the same mistake again. My fault, no-one elses.

Just my opinion and not intended to offend any FWD TDi owners.

And if you want another opinion, which is why TSN is so good, strong and diverse, then here it is.

I started life in the Audi marque with a 90BHP A4 TDI SE. It was economical, but a tad underpowered. However, it was a real step up from my previous car, which had been a Mark 3 1.6 Golf. I then changed it for a silver A4 130 TDI Sport on a 52 plate and kept this for a year. I was impressed by the extra power coming from the 90 BHP and was impressed with the handling, the rise, the build quality and of course, the economy.

I got rid for a brand new A4 1.9TDI 130 BHP GmbH Sport, and all the above applied. The ESP I only ever found to be a slight hindrance was when it was really wet and slippy and wanting to set off from junctions. As I don't do too much driving, this was not a problem for me.

I then changed for an A4 3.0 Sport cab, and I won;t go there. The handling of the soot chuckers was much better.

I know have the 2.0TDI. The ESP is upgraded and it never causes me a problem. In fact, it has done what it is designed to and saved my bacon on more than one occasion, when tackling roundabouts at speed in the wet!

I have to say, if you can afford it, go for a 2.0TDI, but the economy is about 10mpg less (40mpg average) than the 1.9TDI!

Front drive 1.9 tdi is fine for the purpose. The Quattro version will add a little bit of traction but hardly any grip. Those cars are not designed to be fun to drive and you will hate driving either after an Elise anyway so might as well adapt your driving style and save money with the FWD. While you're at it, just spend £10K in the Audi (2002 tdi with 50K miles) and buy a 968 with the remaining £8K. Job done.

MrMe, do you think you could ease off on slating cars other people bought, with their own money, because that's what they wanted?

It's just staring to get a little annoying reading comments like that constantly. Yours may be a bag of shite, but mine isn't. I appreciate you hate it, and never really liked it. I value your opinions, but do you think you could perhaps tone down the choice of words. Some people cannot afford what you have.

I'd agree with getting quattro for cornering, I wish I had got it, but not for the fact you cannot seem to leave a junction without alarming wheel spin - perhaps it's down to the driver style - I just don't have that problem, and I don't hang about either, as several will vouch for me.

I'd not tell someone to ignore the 1.9 TDi 130. It's a cracking engine and I've had 3 of them. True, the PD140's are better, but there's nothing wrong with the 130.

If I had a choice of the 130 vs 140 TDI engines? Get the 140. It pulls harder, is quieter and more refined. It's not as economic though.

Right, I'll go put my flame-proof suit on ... FIREdevil.gif
