RETRO FITTING DIS AND CRUISE ON A4 B6

evidently 300 posts isn't enough for one thread so I'll add my tale of woe to this epic saga.

I have a Q module, which I installed to my A4 (Nov 2001 3.0 Quattro ASN). I followed the guide (bless you gentlemen for this gift bestowed upon us) and cruise control works but DIS doesn't. The up & down buttons on the stalk do nothing and the reset button turns the display off and on as I press it. My original vagcom log showed my steering wheel to be "standard", event though it's a 3 spoke sports so when I recoded for CC and DIS I changed it to a 3 spoke (changed the second digit to a "2") but when the DIS didn't work I did the full procedure again and reverted back to a 0. so my final code is 00042.

So... I guess my question is.. wft is going on? is the Q module only suitable for a multi function steering wheel? Is my washer/DID stalk faulty? I haven't fitted the ground wire to pin 1 of the instrument cluster because I don't want to go to the effort if the DIS isn't working.. but should I do that specifically to see if it makes it work?

All advice, wit, sarcasm etc greatfully received

cheers

Nj

(just noticed this is only my 2nd post on tyresmoke. I'm also known as fourcircle or NJ on other forums)

Have you changed the adaptation in channel 19 of the instrument cluster (17)?

aha. the master! :) Actually I went into the Instrument Cluster (17) and didn't know where to go after that without doing damage. That's what i forgot to mention in my above post.

(seems that no matter the forum I frequent I end up coming back to you for advice mate :) )

Taken from Ross-Tech VCDS label file

A019,0,Additional Features

A019,5,Additional Features

A019,6,?xxxx: Illumination (MY 2002 and above)

A019,7,0 = Needle and Scale only active at "Light ON"

A019,8,1 = Needle already active at "Ignition ON"

A019,9,2 = Scale already active at "Ignition ON"

A019,10,3 = Scale (2nd Map) and Needle at "Ignition ON" active

A019,11,

A019,12,x?xxx - Board Computer

A019,13,0 - only Level 2 (Long Time Memory)

A019,14,1 - Level 1 and 2

A019,15,

A019,16,xx?xx - Driver Information System (DIS)

A019,17,0 - DIS 1 / 1 - Highline without DIS / 2 - DIS 2

A019,18,

A019,19,xxx?x - Outside Temperature

A019,20,0 - not active / 1 - active

A019,21,

A019,22,xxxx? - Remote Clock

A019,23,0 - not active / 1 - clock active

So if your coding is currently 30100 change it to 31000 for a B6.

mac daddy, thanks mate

My coding is currently 01400 so it should change to 01000 then yes? what's the difference in DIS1 and DIS2 (3rd part of the code)?

I'm guessing the 4 in my code may be something to do with my cluster showing how many miles I have left on my current tank of fuel but bugger all else?

Ah.. That would seem to be a problem. When I go into 17 - Instrument Cluster, I don't have an option 19. I have "Adaptation - 10", which brings me to this

vcds_ss_1.jpg

Or do I need to go to login - 11 first?

vcds_ss_2.jpg

Entering 13861 to enable adaptation seems logical but I don't want to do it and make a monumental hash of something.

Or have I missed something else that's bloody obvious?

Thanks for bearing with me.

Ben, you're an absolute hero. it's aliiiiive!

Never have I been so happy to see a washer fluid warning. I've now run a long cable from pin 1 to an earth point and will pick up a washer fluid sensor at some point in the future.

And so now I can take full advantage of seeing just what piss poor fuel economy that 3.0 V6 is giving me :)

Once again mate, thanks +++

and to add to this thread for anyone else who's doing it... I haven't previously found details and pictures on running an earth from the mysterious pin 1 so here goes.. (and excuse the iffy phone photos)

This is best done when you have the steering wheel off. I can say with some authority it just gets in the way when you do it later.

Remove the centre trim under the instrument cluster by pulling straight out. Then remove the two T25 torx head screws hiding deep in that recess.

18052011707.jpg

if you need the clearance (like if your steering wheel is back on again) remove the two 8mm allen head bolts to let you take the top cowling off (it has a cloth bit attached to a plastic piece that's fastened at both sides)

18052011706.jpg

There's a blue plug behind the left side of the instrument cluster and a green plug behind the right side (as you look at the cluster, sitting in the driver's seat). If you have the lower trim under the steering column undone you can undo these plugs without even taking the instrument cluster out. You may even be able to do the wiring with just the blue plug hanging down.

Here's the green plug pictured side on. To release it you hook a nail or screwdriver behind the pink lever/arm thing and lift up. as it lifts up the plug is pushed out of its socket. same for the blue one on the other side.

18052011704.jpg

Here's the blue plug. If you look really closely pin 1 is actually marked. it's the one i'm pointing at with the screwdriver in this picture

18052011698.jpg

To disassemble you slide the pink end bit off and cut the little cable tie.

18052011697.jpg

The white internal part of the plug will now slide out of the blue casing. pin 1 is the empty space on the far right here

18052011699.jpg

Strip 10mm from the end of your wire. I had to cut 2 strands of wire to let me twist the remaining strands together into a good size to fit into the space here. There's already a pin and metal strip. Ideally I wanted to solder my new wire in here but I would have had to take the pin out of the plug and I wasn't sure with solder on it I'd be able to fit it back in again. so I pressed it in with a thumb nail and a small flat head screwdriver.

18052011700.jpg

Now route your new wire alongside the others and GENTLY slide the blue casing back over and then slide the pink end cap on again.

I connected the other end of my cable to the earth point directly behind the instrument cluster and left plenty of extra cable coiled so I can run it through the bulkhead and connect it to a washer fluid level sensor at a later date.

18052011701.jpg

Refit everything again in reverse, being careful with the plugs. I had to use a tiny bit of blutack on the end of my t25 driver to stop losing the two T25 screws before I could get the right places.

And I think that's about it. Let me know if i've missed anything.

aha! Well if you want a more "outdoorsy" experience further north give me a shout. Hell if you know anyone with money to invest in tourim, technology or wood give me a shout too sincethat's what I do here.

And PM me your address so I can work out how to fool the post office into sending a cheeky little bottle of russia's finest across to you (they got upset recently when I tried to post a bottle or tar snapps). :)

  • 2 months later...

Just managed to install DIS - thanks to all who contributed on this thread, made the task much less daunting.

Overall was relativley straight forward, couple of the clips were a little fiddley but once you understand how they work all was straight forward... was a little nervous pulling off the airbag and getting the plug out of it - but was uneventful with no mishaps :)

Thanks again all

Regards - Ian

Well, what a thread, much as I applause those attempting such a DIY project the issues highlighted here have persuaded me not to even consider doing similar myself. For this reason I have booked my A4 into get the DIS done next week. Thankfully I've had steering control unit fitted last week when I had cruise fitted so hopefully won't encounter any of the issues highlighted here. Oh and hi from another newbie
