harminder
Can someone please confirm what mileage my 2000 golf 1.8T gti should have a cambelt change? Currently car is just about to hit 60k and so was due a service. I was not sure if I should be getting the cambelt changed at the same time or wait until 80k? I have also heard somewhere that 100k is ok before the belt is changed? Thanks
alexc
If it was mine I'd get it done at 60k!
Rustynuts
It should tell you in the service manual.
mulkbear
Believe it or not but the cam belt interval is 120,000 miles but all V.A.G timing belts are now recommend for change every 4 years so i would change it. 120,000 miles or every 4 years
Mook
120K miles Holy sh*t - I've never ever let a car run that long before without a cambelt change. Despite Mulkbear's note, Baz, (he's a VW tech so he knows the VW guidelines) I would recommend it's done at 60K miles and then every 40K after that. All I would add is that you don't want to know the damage it can cause if it goes - as Mrs Mook found out when we had a high mileage Golf TDI which had allegedly had the cambelt changed at 60K. 80K and it broke. £1600 later and it was back on the road... Rustynuts
There's a big difference between the TDI engine and the 18t petrol engine. There's far less load on the cam belt for a start (given the pd injectors are driven off the cam belt) and due to the high compression ratio of a diesel the valves occupy the same space as the piston at tdc, only not at the same time. I don't know for certain about the 1.8t, but I know some petrol engines can snap a belt without any damage to engine components. The Ford 2.0ltr pinto is one which springs to mind, but I've not had a petrol car since my old Mk1 RS2000 way back when, so I don't know about any others lately. Don't ever miss a cambelt change on a TDI.
harminder
Thanks guy - I think to be on safe side I will get it done on 60k service! Is their anything else that would need to changed at the same time (i.e water pump)? Also the car seems to be running fine but it does sound a little off at idle.....more like a diesel than a petrol sometimes so just wandering if I should mention that before I give the car in? mikeg1962
[ QUOTE ] If it was mine I'd get it done at 60k! [/ QUOTE ] The 100k plus mileage is accurate, however I got mine done as a condition of purchase at just below 60k. Just to be on the safe side... jouleskeys
My 2001 Golf GT TDi 115bhp is at 120,072 miles on the clock and is due for a cambelt change. It is booked in a queue after the new year, though someone please tell me, am I right to refrain from using the car until after the change or do you think it'll be ok as long as I get it done asap??? The last change was at 57,000 miles 5 yrs ago. Is the number 60k miles a maximum amount ie giving another 10k, not that I'd need the 10k, just maybe having the change at around 121,000 so I can get about until the change at the beginning of the new year Edited December 19, 2009 by jouleskeys

I have now changed it myself but I did have the diesel noise when at about 2k revs and more obvious if I reved the engine then let off the power and on the way back to idle the noise came. I was told by a mechanic m8 that it was the idler on the way out and should change it asap. I drove it (tentatively) for about a week before changing it but was hair raising stuff as can cause big damage if the belt does go.
