sidlad
hi evryone, hoping one of the VW techs can help me out. I have a 52 plate bora sport 130 tdi pd. I'm due the dreaded four year/40K service in august, but just been informed by my local VW dealers that i should get my cam belt replaced at the same time as VW recommend it should be done at four years old if the requisite mileage has not been reached (i've only got 33K) on the clock. I was under the impression that cam belts on any car didn't need replacing until the mileage had hit at least 40K and often higer than this. Ordinarliy i just bite the bullet and get it done but as i desperately try to egt on the housing ladder i had only budgetted for a £300 service not a £750 service. Should i get the cam belt replaced or will it wait til this time next year. Also is the £300 odd i've been quoted OK, or should i look at other VW specialists who aren't officially VW affiliated. Chhers in advance.
Bounce
Well if you have been advised and then don't have it done, if it fails it will cost alot more than £300 to put right, the price sounds about right
sidlad
See what you're saying Kate, just wanted a few second opinions off VW etchs (help mulkbear!!). I just think that as they have never even seen my car and told me that up to 6months ago the dealerships advised it done at 40K...then i'd be Ok to wiat til i reached around 40K?? Maybe i'm being a cynic?
Bounce
i wouldn't take the chance on it, i believe its suppose to be done either on a certain amount of miles or years which ever comes sooner, i must say though i have just had a letter from them myself telling me my golfs due for its belt change, its really funny seeing as they have my car in for a new cylinder head! Rustynuts
Kate, just make sure they put a new belt on when they rebuild the engine. I'll bet they won't unless you tell them to. Sidlad, you don't really want to take a chance on the belt for another year do you? The rubber perishes on the belt regardless of how much it gets driven. pingpongpo
I thought the cambelt didn't need changing until about 60K miles on the diesels?
Rustynuts
It's actually 80k miles for the cambelt on the 1.9 pd diesel, except the Sharan which is 60k, and I think it's every 4 years if it doesn't make the mileage limit.

Hudster
40k seems very low, I think they might be taking the pi$$ a bit here, I've never heard of anyone having it done with a mileage that low
pingpongpo
Looks like i'll be getting mine done when it flags up for the next service then.
Rustynuts
The service schedule in the handbook in our car doesn't make any distinction about cambelt change interval other than the Sharan. Strange, but that's VW for you. If you know when it's supposed to be changed how can the dealers fleece you by 20k miles?
Bounce
Yes i guess they can, but i didn't have it done so it matters not to me they wanted to do mine again on the last service also i think my cars getting spoilt nearly on its 3rd!

mulkbear
[ QUOTE ] (help mulkbear!!). [/ QUOTE ] Your Vehicles cam belt is due every 60k or 4 years and the roller tensioner must be replaced with the cam belt. I would not let the cam belt go past its interval
Wobby
Mines passat pd130 is nearly upto 180k, had it done at 120k by a local garage that has someone who has done many A4 and passat PD's. Cost £300, not a VW belt. Will probably have water pump done this time, thats an extra £50.
Rustynuts
Maybe the 130 Bora is different to the 130 Golf? Double checked the handbook and it's 80k miles, no mention of 4 years.

[/ QUOTE ] It was introduced after VW found out last year that there belt manufacturer (power grip) only give a work life of 4 years for the toothed belts. Now all dealers should be advising customers to have the toothed (cam/timing) belts changed every 4 years.
