NunchukHamster
Afternoon all. 2000 1.8T Sport Estate straight through its MOT on Saturday, but one advisory - rear suspension bushes. Anyone got an idea of cost to do, or whether simple job for DIY mechanic? Cheers.
SteNova
usually a press to get them in unless you replace them with poly bushes £56 for no
mulkbear
Does the car knock when driving over speed bumps ? if not leave them be, as it is a 3 hour job (lower the rear axle, disconnect the rear brake pipes, remove old bushes, press in new bushes, the list goes on) Most Passat/golf/bora/beetle when the bushes get to a certain age they swell and look worn but are OK, if the bushes were worn the car would handle like a jelly mold and knock every time you go over a bump. SteNova
thats why i mentioned the poly bushes, should be easy enough to cut and push the old bushes out then insert the new ones in 2 parts, without fully removing the axle as for swelling and looking worn just look for clean areas where they have been rubbing when trying to move.. my nova rear axle ones are shot and you can see clean black all round them where they have been rubbing on the axle
banny
I think this is the problem I have with my car, I thought it was the rear shocks, so I changed them, only to find I still have lots of banging coming from the rear. Mulkbear can you explain the job a little bit more for me, as I will do it myself. Many thanks.

banny
I have managed to fit these myself, not actually too difficult on a Passat as say a Golf. I never have to disconnect the brake pipes or remove bushes as it comes as a complete unit. The bolt is a little tough to undo for sure, even with WD40. I did have to lower axle for the bushes to clear the body. Make sure you scribe around the edge of the existing bushes so the new ones go back the same way. Can be a pain getting the bolts back in, you have to raise the jack a little at a time, I did on my own, but I reckon if you had some help on that stage it would be a little easier. Reckon it took me about 2 hours to do it, I spent another hour changing the master cylinder grommet and bleeding the brakes The result is superb, a real improvement car is so much more stable, the bushes that came out where totaly shot. I have a little movement at front to sort out now, like when you brake or pull away, I am thinking anti-roll bar drop links or mounting bushes (which look alright)
