Decked
I've always had a slight rattle from my exhaust as I blew the original cats out into the Milltek and lived with it as I thought bits of the cat were down the pipes somewhere Anyway the rattle started to get worse last weekend (Quite warm) so I took it into BBT's and asked Shaun to take a look. He diagnosed it as pinking.... Anyway he took a look at my Revo settings and it turns out my timing was set to 9 on the SPS (think my mates on Friday night have been tinkering as they set the Anti theft option as a joke ) I know this should be set to 5 so they probably got the settings originally wrong (i'll get em ). So we go back and he turns the timing down to 5 as it should be set on 98 RON (I always use Optimax). This immediately removed the rattle that had got worse on the Saturday. There was still a slight rattle that I thought was coming from the exhaust. Just as a tester I turned the timing to 4 and the rattle has totally gone. Although my ECU should still recognise different grades of fuels mine has only had Optimax I’m struggling to understand what’s going on (it rattled before the Revo was installed so it's now actually been cured with the correct settings on the SPS unit) Does anyone experience this rattle (pinking) with their R as standard because I know mine did it with the standard VW ECU? Thanks Edit: It did sound like an exhaust rattle originally
mb
At what sort of rpm etc. did you hear it ?
Decked
low RPM from 1500 to 3500 only on 1st/2nd
UKLooney
pinking is caused by overheating around the valve/sparkplug area. Can be caused by (to name a few) Poor quality fuel Dodgy sparkplug Badly seated valve Vacuum leak from inlet manifold Dodgy injector Timing shot to hell faulty knock sensor it normally only occurs when the engine is under heavy load, ie. 1-2k in higher gear
Skidmark
Have the knock sensors been checked... one or both may have given up.. ...just a thought
UKLooney
I would inspect/change the plugs and flush the injectors with cleaning fluid.
Decked
[ QUOTE ] Have the knock sensors been checked... one or both may have given up.. ...just a thought [/ QUOTE ] I have no idea what the knock sensors are so i'll find out and have them looked at.... I'll also change the plugs as i'm sure they need doing anyway. Thanks
