Simonl
Auto Express had a small article on a new K&N performance air filter for the VAG 2.0FSI engine (including Turbo). Has anyone used these before, are they a worthy mod for £47.99. From my glory days of modding cheap cars (Nova SR's and the like ), performance air filters were only ever worth doing on turbo'd cars as the gains on NA or injection engines weren't really noticable. petsy
I believe the main problem with such filters is if you over-oil them it messes up the MAF sensor.

RedRobin
I don't understand the "if you over-oil" bit either. Does the K&N filter require oiling ? In discussing my soon-to-be-installed by my VW dealer Carbonio Air Intake, they told me that MAFs were often a weak link anyway, regardless of aftermarket air filters etc, but with the Mk4s and they hadn't had any problems with a Mk5 yet. Obviously the K&N is somewhat cheaper than either the Carbonio or Neuspeed products, but it seems to me that the most acceptable (re warranty) is the Carbonio as the Neuspeed involves changing the whole engine cover. Also, they both appear to have more performance and reliability benefits than the K&N - I would certainly hope so, given the price differences! mikemod
K&N air filters flow much more air than a stock paper filter by using a special oiled cotton air filter element. You then wash them and re oil them every so often instead of replacing them. I had one in my MK2 16V GTI and it was really noticable at higher revs, and a nice induction note as well. Snoopy
I have a panel filter K&N in the mk1 GTI had it in there 14 years i think it is now, You simply take it out clean it then reoil every so often depending on the climate your in and how dirty its getting. It's paid for itself over the years over buying many standard paper units. Many people over oil them but i use to do motorcross so i got use to having to do these types of filters on motorbikes long before i even started to drive. Simonl
K&N state on their website that this air filter will not invalidate your warranty. I can't see how it would either, only insurance, if you decide to declare it
gjowen
LeMan, I'd be interested to know the result if you install one of these...looks like quite a cheap mod. Some induction kits give the engine a great noise, but i'm interested if these particular replacment filters give the same 'throaty' result? Anyone any ideas? RedRobin
A neighbour of mine has just bought an immaculate Escort RS Turbo and fitted a K&N and it sounds great when changing gear....Sound of turbo spinning. The Mk5 GTI's FSI has a different turbo arrangement than most other turbo cars so it will sound different methinks.
gtiveedubber
I thought the sound was the air going through the filter rather than the turbo spinning, however I may be wrong. Because the air flows through a sponge rather than the paper it makes that whoosh noise.
RedRobin
Tbh I don't know if the sound is of a farting filter or a spinning spool but on that RS it sounds like a spinning turbo. I'm sure someone will educate me on this. The Carbonio uses a sponge filter....I can't wait!!
Simonl
maybe take the filter out and go for one drive to see

Plus, changing anything from manufacturers spec invalidates the VW Warranty in the UK, some delaersv are cool about such 'minor' things, others aren't!!! scotw
I had a K&N on a prior car, it was fitted by my dealer (I bought it and asked them to fit it) and my insurance company said that it did not change my insurance as it was a minor modification. It sounded great, improved throttle response and improved fuel economy, be nice to know anyone that fitted one to the GTi

RedRobin
I'll see AwesomeGTI at the GTI Int show tomorrow....They'll update me....Carbonio on order. Naturally I will report in due course. I'm signing off now.
gjowen
I was decided on getting one for the car, so went to Halfords local to me. Got the guy to phone up K&N to get one in and he claimed they don't supply this part!? It also appears you cant order direct unless you are in the US....very frustrating!! Simonl
AutoExpress ran an article on it last week. Phone them direct- there is a contact number on that link i posted at the begining of this thread. In fact the part number on that link is the correct one for the 2.0T FSI

gjowen
So.... I installed the aforementioned K&N filter the other day... Not any vast improvement, but i think there is a better pick up and better throttle response. No difference in engine noise really either. But what do you expect for £45 delivered!
