A Dilemma

Okay gang, this is how it goes:

R32 DBP, paint generally in VGC. However, a nice scuff mark has appeared on the bonnet thanks to some debris thrown up off the road by a feckin caravan SAUER0421.GIF

There's also a few stone chips and swirls that have appeared on the very front of the bonnet.

Now, I took it to the valeters that did my supaguard who said they could do a 40% improvement with the chips and scuffs, i.e. it would still be noticeable but only of you looked for it. They've quoted £179.00 for a buff, touch up the choips etc and re-seal with Supaguard.

So trotted off down to VW bodyshop who said they will take the bonnet off, respray and re-laquer and blend the wings in for about £600. He sadi if I can get some supaguard, they will do that for me too.

Question is what would you do?? I'm tempted to save up and do the whole bonnet thing, but I'm stumped.

Over to you oh detailing experts 169144-ok.gif

Personally I'd go for the £179 option. Either way, you could drive out of the garage/worksop and pick up another stone chip 100 metres down the road. Might be worth talking to another detailer to see if they are more confident of eliminating the faults?

The £600 option sounds like something to consider prior to selling the car, but not if you're keeping it for any length of time. Like ChrisAn says, you could get another chip driving out of the dealership - bang goes £600!

If the damage is bad enough that you want to tackle it, then I would consider opting for the cheaper fix.

My bonnet has several chips on it (black car, they stick out). At the moment I can live with them because I know any remedial work will be short lived and I'll be keeping the car for a while yet, so they'll just come back. There may come a time when there are enough chips and scratches that it warrants correction, but not yet.

The problem is that if it really bothers you that much then you are going to be fed up everytime you see the marks/chips.

Personally I would go for the £179 option also. I would not risk painting the complete front end as, firstly, it wont be as good as the factory finish you have at the moment and, secondly, there is more risk with it going wrong and leaving overspray and paint dust over the rest of the car and interior.

Oh, and £600 is better spent elsewhere on...

...20 MF cloths, 10 Wash Mitts, 10 Water Magnets, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage, 3 and a tube of Scratch-X!?!

my bonnet respray on a perlescent blue GTI was a lot less than that. I think it was around the £200 mark from littleknocks in wokingham. But might be a little more for just the bonnet as i ended up having about 3/4 of the car re-lacquered due to some manky chav.

Give Chris a call at littleknocks and tell him chris with the Keyed GTI sent you his way.

Thanks for the replies gang grin.gif

My sensible head is telling me to just do the buff and reseal. It would get rid of the swirls etc and I guess I could live with a few stone chips and the scuff!

As has been said, I could get the bonnet and wings done and drive out of the bodyshop and pick up another stone chip, so I think I'll get the bonnet etc. done properly when its really peppered at the front.

Cheers for the tip as well skifly 169144-ok.gif

I looked at the bonnet bra's but to be honest, its not really that bad - yet grin.gif

I think if I get it resprayed eventually, I'll probably have the paint film fitted.

Mate for that kind of money you could buy the equipment and do it yourself with ease. Supaguard is rubbish. It's no different to any other sealant. There are better on the market.

Get yourself over to http://www.detailingworld.co.uk and have a look round.

If you wanted someone to fully polish and protect your bonnet you'd probably get change from £50.

Heres some details I've done recently using less than £200 worth of equipment in total including the Porter Cable, pads, cloths etc.

Fiat Coupe

200sx (in a right state)

Audi A3
