Mk5 R32 test drive

Just had my test drive in the Golf R32. It was a 3dr model with DSG and the leather recaros.

My initial impression of the car was that it looked quite good from the outside. Not to loud but a few nice touches, the rear wheels nicely fill the arches. It was Deep Blue Pearl which looked good but I would pick another colour if I were to buy one.

The salesman started it up to move it out of the carpark, whilst you could tell it was a 6 cylinder engine there was not much noise at idle. I got in the car and the salesman drove initially. He did his best to tell me how great a car it was but I was not really listening as I wanted to make up my mind on my own. From the passneger seat it felt a farily rapid car and the seats were comfortable and gripped well.

We swapped over and it was my turn to drive. I have never driven a DSG equipped car before and before the test drive I was interested in a manual (allegedly manuals are harder to come by and harder to sell on??? sales crap I think). I thought the car would be similar to the BMW SMG system with no creep like an auto box but the DSG does creep when you release the brake. Moving away with the car in D mode the changes were smooth and you could drive the car in a relaxed manner. It is no doubt and impressive gearbox, but it struck me as an automatic car without the bad parts of an auto box. I would still go for a manual. Around the 30mph limit roads the car sat nicely in traffic and didn't jump when you pulled away. As the roads opened up to some nsl B roads I picked up speed, DSH now in manual mode, the engine has some nice torque in the lower rev range and picks up cleanly.

The engine very rarely showed its weight and front mounted position until you were braking going down hill and then it did show up. On initial turn in the car felt very keen and settled quickly in the bends. The brakes were the usual VAG over servoed affair which I did struggle with when trying to stop smoothly.

Overall it is a very good car. However I want to see what the new S3 is like before I place and order for one.
