simonlari Posted July 1, 2006 Report Share Posted July 1, 2006 I have a sudden loss of power although now and again it feels like it suddenly kicks in ie there is very rarely any power below 3000rpm .The air mass sensor has been checked .Has anyone any ideas what it may be . Too many variables as to what could be causing the problem. I dont think the turbo has blown. Have you had a look around the engine bay for loose/broken pipes? simonlari Posted July 2, 2006 Author Report Share Posted July 2, 2006 I have had three independant garages do ecu reads ,with the first, picked up some vacume pipe defects which were replaced.the second didnt pick up anything and the third thought it may be a damaged cat so the cat was disconected .though it didt seem to make much difference when driven without it.now another guy is checking it out who used to work for BMW and has a ECU diagnostics checker.THe problem seems to be worse in warmer weather.There are no nasty noises coming from the turbo.Though another mechanic friend said that you wouldnt realy here it from a diesel engine.He said to check if there is any play in the turbo shaft and that would indicate worn turbo bearings. kerbside Posted September 28, 2006 Report Share Posted September 28, 2006 I have had experiences with similar symptoms and diagnostic computers showing vacuum problems. In each case the mass air flow sensor was the culprit. While these cars were VW and Vauxhall not BMW they all used similar looking Bosch hot film type sensors. Personally I would check each and every vacuum operated component and hose. Measure and check the output at the vacuum pump too. Failing that try another mass air flow sensor. They are pretty fragile at the best of times and could still be at fault after testing as the test conditions may not duplicate the conditions when the fault occurs. I certainly would not go changing turbochargers! Unless the turbo is billowing out tonnes of smoke or the shaft has a good 2mm of side movement. If the wastegate is not working as it should this would indicate a vacuum fault too as the wastegate on pretty much every turbo diesel is vacuum operated. Dave320d Posted January 28, 2008 Report Share Posted January 28, 2008 Hi Simon, apols to bring this one up after so long but wondered how this was resolved. I have a similar problem on my 2001(136) 320d touring - power good through revs when cold but at normal operating temp it's dead until around 3,000rpm then kicks in. Had a new turbo 12 months ago and just had new air mass meter and breather pipe by specialist. I'm now trying adding a dose of Millers Diesel treatment to the tank to clean out the injectors etc. How did yours get resolved - I'd appreciate some advice. thanks, Dave Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
