dww
Hi, Posted this on the A8 forum, but had no response so I thought I would try it on you guys ... I scanned my new A8 with VAG-COM and it came out with three engine faults, and five in the central locking (alarm) system. It's also saying there is an open circuit fault with the radio antenna, but this works perfectly so I'll chalk that either to the Concert radio - which the VAG-COM manual says doesn't behave properly - or to the Dension i-pod thingy. The engine faults say: <ul type="square"> [*] 17841 Secondary air pump relay (j299): open circuit [*] 17840 Secondary Air injection solenoid valve (n112): open circuit [*] 17977 Cruise control switch (e45) implausible signal I knew that the cruise was a bit dodgy (sometimes stops working) so either I'll get it fixed or I won't. But I have no idea what the others are about ... should I be worried? The central locking faults are as follows: <ul type="square"> [*] 01371 alarm triggered by door contact switch, drivers side [*] 01371 alarm triggered by door contact switch, drivers side [*] 01370 alarm triggered by interior monitoring [*] 01134 alarm horn (h12) 49-00 no communications There are also two messages about the keys: <ul type="square"> [*] 00955 - key 1 09-00 adaptation limit surpassed [*] 00956 - key 2 09-00 adaptation limit surpassed Same question: should I worry about these? I fret a bit sometimes ... DWW PS Car is a 1999 (D2) facelift A8 (2.8 30v V6 non-sport, non-quattro)
crasher
Re: Central Locking faults. Have you cleared them down and then performed a re-scan. Some of these look like simple alarm trigger alerts that could be historic. Cannot add much to the engine faults other than to say that i get the cruise control fault occuring on a regular basis. I also have a whole host of other beculiar fault codes from time to time, but have learnt to live with, and accept them. Most of them i cannot find in the bentley manual so i stopped worrying
peterb
I'll go with Crasher on this one - the alarm and key faults are very common. Just clear them and see what comes back. I see most of those on almost every older car I scan ... except for 01134. You may find that your alarm doesn't actually sound - might be worth testing it. I would be inclined to get all of the engine faults attended to - probably not very significant, but they could be having a minor affect on the behaviour of the engine. With regard to the antenna fault - if the Denison is one of those devices which connects in line with the aerial lead, then that is almost certainly the cause of the recorded fault. dww
Thanks for these. I will clear the central locking faults and see if they come back and stop fretting too much now I know that they are common on other cars! I'll also test the alarm (thinks: how?) and get the engine faults looked into. The Dension thingy connects between the CD changer and the head unit, so not directly in line with the ariel, but I can't worry too much about that given that it goes up and down and gives perfect reception .. I read somewhere that the Concert I head units sometimes report incorrect errors.
dww
Aha .. just tested the alarm (left the sunroof open and reached inside). This triggered lots of light and indicator flashing, but no horn. Add that to the 'look into' section.
dww
Here's an update. I looked up the engine information for an APR series engine, and it says that it doesn't have a secondary air system (hence no pump or solenoid). Might explain that error! Shouldn't the ECU be adapted to know that or something??!! Still don't know where the alarm horn is, though ...
UweRoss
[ QUOTE ] Shouldn't the ECU be adapted to know that or something??!! [/ QUOTE ] Yup. You either have the wrong ECU, wrong software in your ECU, or your ECU is incorrectly coded. Post details. Select -> 01-Engine -> Fault Codes -> Copy Codes. Paste the results here. Use an intermediate file if necessary. That way we can see all of the data regarding your ECU. -Uwe-

dww
Does anybody know how the ECU is adapted to the presence/absence of the secondary air components? The coding looks good to me: 05 = EU and MVEG III emissions 5 = Front WD with traction control 5 = automatic gearbox 3 = Audi A8 Maybe the first pair of digits be 04 for EU and MVEG II emissions - would that mean no sec. air system?? dww
Curiously, if I set the first two digits to 04 (MVEG II emissions) rather than 05 (MVEG III emissions standard) the error disappears. As the secondary air system is about emissions standards during cold starts, I suspect that (at least for APR and AQD engines) these two digits actually tell the ECU whether to look for a secondary air relay and valve or not. How could I find out what the correct emissions coding for an APR engine (30v V6, without a secondary air system) should be?
UweRoss
First two digits: 04: MVEG II (EU 2) 05: MVEG III (EU 3D) 10: EU 3 11: EU 4 So either 04 or 10. Not sure what the difference between them is. -Uwe-
