GTI Turbo Performance In Hot Weather...

As we all know in the South, it's been fairly hot. I expected to feel some difference in performance due to what I have heard about turbos getting sluggish in hot weather (assuming it's true). However, if anything at 15K miles she seems to have reached yet another eager threshold and feels even looser and free running.

Most of the time I don't feel any need to re-map. I don't want to bore everyone with 'boy-racer' stories but I had a very friendly and safe play with an immaculate Honda R last week.....All safe distance, letting each other out and thumbs up stuff and swopping places over about 15 miles on fast dual carriageway. Then we came to a long steep hill. He was in front and overtaking and pulled over to let me draw level and then we both floored it side by side. He had a passenger but I had a nearly full tank. I thought I wasn't going to overhaul him but S-mode blasted me well past. GTI's turbo deffo not sluggish on that occasion.

How is everyone finding their GTI turbo in hot weather ?

As of yet i've never noticed the turbo feeling 'slugish' in warm weather, we also run a TT 225 and never noticed any slugish feeling with the turbo. Altough i can notice a difference between which feuls i use in the GTI, definalty runs better on Optimax than Ultimate, never tried standard unleaded as i don't like poisoning the one's i love..!

But i love the sound of the car on a crisp morning in winter, and mines standard, not yet touched, like yours.

... Best thing for an engine is to be as hot as possible but not so much that it melts, but to have the air coming into it as dense as possible and for the turbo as cool as possible.

This is why they can feel sluggish during hot weather, less dense, warmer air doesn't cool the intercooler or allow such a strong Air / fuel mixture to be used. 169144-ok.gif

Hi all , the ECU will alter the fuel mixture depending on the air temperature , therefore there should be no difference noted no matter what the outside air temp is ,unlike a carberated car , the ECU cannot adjust a carb at all ,but fuel injection air to petrol ratios can !!!

hope this makes sense , cheers Brian

There will be some reduction in bhp, remember the air is less dense when it's warmer. I can sometimes tell the difference, but that's probably me thinking I can tell the difference :P

One I drove today went pretty well.

....Sounds as if you like the Mk5 GTI 169144-ok.gif. Obviously most of us in this forum are very enthusiastic about the car, but it's recognised as one of those rare cars which the manufacturer got right (providing it's the type of vehicle you want/need).

go for white DHA 169144-ok.gif

love the look of the GTI in white smlove2.gif

if I had a daily drive then I'd buy one (in white - no, black - no, red aargghhh smashfreakB.gif) to help preserve the .:R - very relaxing, equally invigorating - a sign of a good engine, performs very well with easy tuning options and there's a whole bunch of Tyresmokers here giving quality help and information.

Have followed this forum just as much as the .:R forum since ordering the MkV smile.gifcoffee.gif

And we want pics once you've got it 169144-ok.gif

Not noticed any performance loss in the hot weather. If anything it's been the opposite as the traction has been so good laugh.gif I would say that my economy has improved recently, but that could also be down to the engine loosening a bit more - now at 11,000ish.

We had a few 40+ degree days here across summer and I beleive that the car was a little less eager in these circumstances than normal. I not talking massive performance gaps it just feels not quite at its best. The air conditioner would have been running pretty hard also.

Then again I might have been the one feeling sluggish.

The car was well run in at that time around 7,000km on the clock - it now has 12,000km. I also feel that it doesn't really enjoy sitting in traffic on those kind of days - I guess it is harder to get cooler/denser air into the engine.

I think it's the same for all engines re the temperature/air density thing.

Was once on a 747 leaving Hong Kong & altho' in theory there were less people on it than seats availble, they were still chucking the riff-raff out at the economy end to lessen the weight 'cos the typhoon season air was so thin.

It's 30 - 35 all year round here, we have 2 seasons, HOT and HOTTER. Feels great to me, had mine for over a year and 30,000km now. No chance to try cold weather tho', only DRY and WET. Just did a major service and change DSG oil and filter, cost a bomb here, almost RM1,000.00 for 5 lts of oil and filter.
