M8CKN
Thought occured to me last night, why does a German Company like Audi use the Italian word for 4 to define its 4 wheel drive cars? Anyone?
NewNiceMrMe
It doesn't define 4 wheel drive actually, it just happens that they all have 4 wheel drive. See, Quattro is a subsidiary company of Audi. A bit like M is to BMW. Quattro is to Audi. A related, yet distinctly different, entity.
JamesB
If BMW didn't have the M division, would they just be BW then?
NewNiceMrMe
Hmm, and if Audi didn't have the Quattro division, they'd be, ermmmm, bankrupt?
shark_90
Well it does use "quattro" to define it's 4wd models, the question of quattro GmbH is a different question altogether. My car never went anywhere near quattro GmbH yet it is most definately a quattro A4, and quattro is the indicator of a 4wd Audi over a 2wd Audi. NewNiceMrMe
Well it's still a silly name.

FuntimeFrankie
QUATRO (1983 - 5) A sort of "Fruits of the forest" fizz that left as quickly as it came. Orange, lime, grapefruit and... another fruit blended in a futuristic vending machine (see The Core - Drink) to create a rather poor-tasting can of sod all. They tinker with S and RS models, do things like the suspension setup for the S-Line models and the "GmbH" Sport models before them. They don't supply the 4wd bits, and I don't think they had a hand in creating the quattro drivetrain. I think they were set up specifically to tune normal Audis, and as a result of the original Audi quattro car's success, they ended up being named quattro GmbH. But I'm probably wrong and could have just made all that up out of thin air.

shark_90
Not sure, but some are called "GmbH Sport" and some have suspension designed by quattro GmbH. I think the kit fitted to GmbH Sport models was also designed by them, which became the B6 S-Line kit.

DHA
and quattro from Audi has a lower case q not a capital.
sitas3
quattro in the Audi sense is two things: 1. A marketing umbrella that covers Torsen and Haldex based drivetrains for 4 wheel drive (The A4/A6/A8 platforms use a Torsen diff designed and manufactured by an American company called Torsen!, and the TT/A3 range use the Haldex LSC designed and manufactured by Haldex!). So, Audi just buy the kit 'off-the-shelf'. 2. quattro GMBH - The Audi subsidiary that designs and hand finishes the RS range of cars, is responsible for Lamborghini and designs the exclusive accessory range like suspension/brake kits and mats! Botang
I think when they decided to start using Haldex they had to make quattro a trade mark as before it had defined the torsen system but no it just denotes a 4 wheel drive system.
