R32North Posted July 19, 2006 Report Share Posted July 19, 2006 I thought that after the success of Quattro is the rallies in the 80/90s, Audi set-up Quattro GMBH as a wholly owned subsidary of Audi to deal with the sporty side of Audis. Prior to that it was used to denote the cars had 4WD - why they used an Italian word I don't know but it probably sounds a lot better than the German word for 4 ! [/ QUOTE ] To take all the techno garble out of it, Audi's Quattro system, which you'll find in the A4, A6, A8, S4, S6, S8, RS4, RS6 is permanent 4WD. VW's 4Motion system, which you'll find on all the 4Motion badged cars, as well as the R32 is semi-permanent 4WD, in that there is a clever control box which engages drive to ther rear wheels when the car's brain thinks it needs it. To confuse matters a bit more, the Audi TT, A3 Quattro and S3 all use the VW 4Motion system, but the car is badged as Quattro to keep the Audi brand consistency. Cris Posted July 19, 2006 Report Share Posted July 19, 2006 It stems from the rally car. To promote the fact that it was four wheel drive (then a novelty) they called the car Quattro. Models after that which had the 4WD system were then called quattro to show their link to the original car. Audi soon became famous for 4WD and the name quattro (good marketing). People would associate quattro with a performance Audi. At the same time BMW's M division became more popular so Audi jumped on the bandwagon and made the quattro 'division'. I understand that they are investing in the group to build them up to a rival to M division or AMG. Others are spot on that quattro now also means the Haldex system fitted to the Golf based cars (TT, A3). And I have one . The RS4 looked absolutley awful when Tiffany was doing his drift demo angainst the M3 absolutley no chassis adjustabilty whatsoever. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, whenever I'm trying a bit of drifting, regardless of if it's round town doing the shopping, commuting a country A-road in the traffic, or munching motorway miles, I find the terrible AWD system in my Audi just makes it a joke. I mean, you can't make a good enough cloud of smoke from the rear tyres to confuse a small dog, let alone look like a Japanese drift god. On normal roads there really wasn't much that could take me in the RS6, even more so in the wet. Yea, people go on that an m3 is faster round the track. Yea, but so is a formula one car..
