looking for A4 Avent TDi - Lots of Q's

My 2p worth on some of the points raised.

I had a Tdi 130 Sport and it suffered horendously from wheelspin in certain conditions e.g. hill starts at junctions in the wet or any junction where you needed to rapidly pull out and it was wet. And that was without a remap etc.

Avants. My next car is an avant. Under normal conditions, I don't expect to gain any additional luggage space. How can I? It's the same size as the saloon tongue.gif

What you do gain is much easier access and the potential to increase the luggage space by removing the load cover and piling things up towards the roof. OK for short journeys but not ideal. Imagine piling suitcase up to go on holiday and then being involved in a motorway smash.

So for me, I gain flexibility with the avant but no more load capacity.

My thoughts on the standard A4 lights are well documented. On my B6 they were diabolical. Had I not been selling it I would have done the bulb upgrades as discussed on here. They were truly shocking and Mrs Milo's Mondeo and Micra put them to shame crazy.gif

On the B7, I went for xenons as a direct consequence of having halogens in the B6.

The sport seats are great in my opinion. I have always found them comfy even on long journeys.

I looked at a 320d before buying the A4. One of the biggest things that put me off was the shape of the boot area. The A4's was much better. However I don't know what the new 3 series boot layout is like.

Dual climate control. In my car it's hardly ever used but when it is, it is a very nice thing to have. Mrs Milo is cold blooded I think so needs her side on HI in all but the hottest of heatwaves tongue.gif

I was always relatively satisified with the Tdi performace. It was a bit agricultutal at low speeds in first but once you got going, I found it quiet. I didn't drive the 320d much so can't really compare the 2 for refinement.

The E46 320d is always going to be faster than the A4 130 Tdi - it's got 20 more bhp and more torque. To compare the 2 is unfair in my opinion as you're not comparing like for like.

I have a 6 speed box on the current A4 whereas the old Tdi was 5 speed. I couldn't go back to the 5 speed now. It's one of those not knowing what you're missing until you've driven it things. The 6 speed seems to allow for better ratios throughout all the gearing.

I can only repeat what I said earlier. If anyone is looking to get a used 130PS Tdi and remap it, I think they have to go for quattro. After my experiences, I think you'd struggle in a 2WD B6 Tdi putting down 170PS+ and the additional torque a remap would give.

If quattro Tdi avants are few and far between, then I'd be looking for a 2.5 V6 Tdi quattro.

Can't help but looking at all the mods and retrofits available for these cars. Can't wait to get one and start modding. don't recon you could do anywere near this amount of customising on the BMW's.

[/ QUOTE ]

It depends what you're after. If it's subtle mods like wheels, suspension, engine upgrades then I'd imagine there are just as many options for BMWs as Audis. There are a lot more mods discussed on here for Audis because there is a much larger percentage of members driving Audis than BMWs.

If it's bling bling customising with neon lights and 5000 watt 'ICE' (as I understand the kids call it wink.gif) then the world is your oyster with any brand.

not them sort of mods really. more comforts and engine improvments I'm after, eg rns-e, dis, cruise, remap etc etc...

I don't want the remap for fast get aways off the lights, I want it for torque when overtaking on the motorways. I love the 6 speed in my lexus and don't really want to go back to a 5 box.

I know now that really only the basics matter as nearly everything can be retro fitted. 6 speed sport, black, leather, sports seats, the rest can be added later on if not present.

Thanks for your help. Just off to Audi now to have a look and a drive of some

A very valid point. For AMD read DMS, etc etc - i.e. there are the same BMW specialists out there as there are Audi. The same applies to wheels, accessories etc.

Finally, something I forgot to add earlier. If you are choosing a B6 A4 then I personally think the Sport fitments make the car a whole lot more attractive. There is no denying that a B6 A4 in Avant or Saloon style is a good looking car. I actually think the Avant looks very stylish indeed and not in the slightest bit 'boy racer'.

Is it possible to remove the exterior chrome trim that seems to come on most of them?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think that the Chrome styling is mainly an SE thing. Many Sport models didn't have it.

[/ QUOTE ]

On the contrary, in my experience most sports did have it. Most people added it as a £130 option before it became standard (for the MY 2004 I think) 169144-ok.gif

Hmmm. I'd say not. I've read on here retro-fitting it is a non starter as the rear quarter light needs to be replaced as it's integral I think meaning it's a costly job. To remove the trim would therefore probably mean replacing those for a start = £s.

That's not to say it can't be done and I'm sure someone will confirm that but I don't think it would be easy. If it were me I'd be nervous as if you bodge it taking it off, you could be left with a very expensive bill for repairing it 169144-ok.gif

Thanks Milo. do you know if it easly removable?

[/ QUOTE ]

no. the glass (and door frame?) is a different thickness depending whether chrome/non chrome is fitted. That's also why it can't be added aftermarket - i looked into this a few years ago.

You're narrowing down your options to one of only 3 cars in the UK at this rate grin.gif

Tell me about it. I've got an a6 that matches up perfectly and found a really good a4 with everything but not sure about the 6 speed yet. good job I've got a month to get it.
